Remote Access to Frontview - ReadyNAS Duo V1
Very occasionally, access to Frontview is lost which requires a reboot of the NAS in order to restore access. Access to shares both locally and through ReadyNAS Remote remain available, as does all functionality of the server.
When on site, it is a simple matter to physically reboot the server on such an occasion, but is it possible to somehow initiate a reboot of the NAS remotely to restore access to Frontview if there is no-one available on site to do this, and access needs to be made?

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you download your logs (Status > Logs > Download all logs) are there any clues in httpd_errors.log?
When you lose access to Frontview is the NAS under heavy load?
You could install EnableRootSSH for Sparc (see http://www.readynas.com/?p=4203) and SSH in.
To restart Frontview you would do e.g.
# /usr/sbin/apache-ssl -f /etc/frontview/apache/httpd.conf -t && /usr/sbin/apache-ssl -f /etc/frontview/apache/httpd.conf -k graceful - ianrenAspirantHi mdgm. Many thanks indeed for responding so quickly. I have just managed to get someone on site to "push the button" and now have Frontview back online. I have just downloaded the logs as you suggest although being a relative newbie, am not quite sure what I'm looking for!!
The last entries in httpd_errors.log are as follows:
[Sat Sep 15 06:25:19 2012] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down
Bad free() ignored (PERL_CORE) at /frontview/lib/Frontview.pm line 2.
Bad free() ignored (PERL_CORE) at /frontview/lib/Frontview.pm line 2.

[Mon Sep 17 12:21:12 2012] [notice] Apache/2.2.6 (Debian) mod_ssl/2.2.6 OpenSSL/0.9.8e DAV/2 mod_apreq2-20051231/2.6.0 mod_perl/2.0.3 Perl/v5.8.8 configured -- resuming normal operations
I will have a go at installing SSH and let you know how I get on. The NAS acts as a store for backups from a number of pc's on the network which backup to it on weekly schedules, so shouldn't be under that much of a heavy load.
This is such a rare occurence that I'm not unduly concerned, but would be nice to know! Many thanks again for your interest. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAre you using Windows/Mac/Linux?
If using Windows download a free application called PuTTy.
If on Mac/Linux use the Terminal.
The port for SSH is port 22 though you could just SSH in via ReadyNAS Remote (think you would need the ReadyNAS Remote Firewall to be disabled to do this though). If you port forward port 22 be sure to set a strong password.
What version of RAIDiator is on the unit?
I wouldn't recommend 4.1.9 due to an ownership issue. - ianrenAspirantAm using W7 and have come across PuTTy so will give iot a go.
Too late!! Have already updated the Duo to 4.1.9!! As this one is mainly just a host for backup storage, I don't think share ownership will be much of an issue but thanks for the nod. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredOf course if you use SSH over Remote you would need to use the 5.XXX.XXX.XXX address of the NAS which you could tell from your PC or when connected via SSH you could use the
ifconfig
command. - ianrenAspirantHi mdgm. I have installed SSH for Sparc on the NAS and PuTTY on my pc. I get the prompt for credentials, and prompted for the password when submitting "admin" as User. However, after having input the admin password I use in Frontview, the window just closes?
I have looked for further guidance on using SSH in the forum but unable to find anything, and feel I am getting out of my "comfort zone" as a novice to all this! I also note that using SSH may invalidate future support, so wonder if I should continue with this, given that loss of access to Frontview is only very occasional anyway? It would be useful though. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSSH user is 'root' not 'admin'
There should be no problem with simply restarting Frontview via SSH. The support issue would arise if you were to break things using SSH e.g. accidentally deleting files, installing/updating stuff you shouldn't etc. - ianrenAspirantHi mdgm. Thx for that. Now in and have entered your command line. Seems to work ok as reports syntax ok.
Also responds with the wording "Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name using 192.168.1.71(current internal ip address) for server name" but doesn't seem to affect anything.
Many grateful thanks for your guidance. - ianrenAspirantHaving installed SSH, am now unable to connect to Duo over ReadyNAS Remote!! Service on the NAS is running, and am still also able to connect to my NV+ V2 which I didn't install SSH on. Remote on the server confirms the registered users. Was OK before! Not sure if a coincidence or not? Have tried stopping and starting the service a few times, and done a restart. Really not having much luck at all recently!!
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThere should be no impact on ReadyNAS Remote by simply installing SSH.
