Remote access to NAS as Windows folder
Hi,
I have a ReadyNAS Duo but can't figure out if it is possible to access it remotely (via internet/WAN) as a network folder in Windows.
I have enabled WebDAV etc, forwarded port 443 and 21 (for FTP).
When I select "Add a network location" on my PC i enter "https://readynas_external_ip/" and click next, first a dialog appears and asks me to "Select certificate", where I can select one of my BankID's (??), after I press cancel on that it pops up a login dialog where I enter login details for a user account that I created on my NAS. But nothing happens, then the login dialog pops up one more time and after that I get the following error message: "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another."
Since I get the login dialog I guess that I at least get some connection to the NAS but why does it not allow me to log in?
Thanks,
Fredrik

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI think if you want to see a windows network folder, the way to go is to use readynas remote. Though you might find the speed to be slower than you want.
There are limitations in Windows Web Folder support, the problem you are seeing is briefly described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebDAV
There's a guide here: http://faq.mydocsonline.com/211/use-web ... net-cloud/ but based on the comments folks have trouble getting it to work with 64 bit versions of Windows. - fiddejohAspirantStephenB,
Thanks for the info. I forgot to mention that preferably I need this to work without having to install any extra applications or drivers on my PC.
I did get it to work by using FTP instead, but is it possible to use secure FTP? - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Explicit FTP over TLS works, though it cannot be mandated by the ReadyNAS (which will accept normal FTP connections as well). Implicit FTP over TLS does not work, neither does SFTP. (This is with FileZilla, I haven't tried other FTP clients).fiddejoh wrote: StephenB,

You can also use straight https through your browser (not setting up a web folder on the PC) - with or without webdav enabled. With sparc-based systems HTTPS won't list files > 2 GB - not an issue with pro or ultra. - RogertheswedeAspirantHello, I've been having a similar issue with my ReadyNAS Duo and spent a lot of time troubleshooting before coming to the forum. I've set up WebDAV support and am able to view folders on the NAS as folders on my Macbook Pro without issue when on my private network. When I try it from a Windows 7 box on the same network I get an authentication challenge twice, then an error, resulting in not being able to view my WebDAV enabled NAS shares as Explorer folders. I wanted to get this all working on my private LAN first before trying it over the web.
All that said, am I having this problem because Windows 7 uses Digest level authentication & the ReadyNAS Duo does not?
Many thanks - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I believe it is the digest level authentication. Using ReadyNAS remote with the Windows 7 unit is one work-around (when it won't be using WebDAV, it would be using CIFS over a VPN).Rogertheswede wrote: Hello, I've been having a similar issue with my ReadyNAS Duo and spent a lot of time troubleshooting before coming to the forum.
