RN102, Mix Raid 0 and Raid 1?

Hi guys,
just got an RN102, I'm gonna fill it with 2xWDRED2TB, is it possible to have this configuration?
2x800GB (1.6TB) Raid 1 iSCSI LUN for backing up my linux server and storing its bigger files.
2x1.2TB (2.4TB) Raid 0 share for my home media stuff. (can also be JBOD or something else if not possible).

Is this doable with FLEX-Raid?
Thanks,
David

  • No.
You could have xraid which will give you 1 volume in RAID1 of 2tb size
You could setup as flexraid with 2 separate volumes (JBOD), each of 2 tb.

What would not be a good idea would be flexraid with a single RAID0 volume spanning 2 disks.

With the 102 you would not be able to do what you want.
  • I see, not that flexy...what if I get 1x1TB and 1x3TB? Can I then get 1TB mirroring + 2TB JBOD?
  • edit.
Ah, I think you may be able to setup a raid 1 volume of 1 tb then use the 2 tb space for a non-redundant volume. I am not sure how to do this though. StephenB has posted that it is possible, but I can't find a method.

If you had a 4 bay unit then you could set up a raid 1 volume on 2 disks and have another disk as a separate volume. Even if this is possible, this wouldn't really be an efficient use of space though as you could a have a 3 disk raid 5 volume with the same overall capacity and setup shares /LUNs on this volume.

I don't think it is possible with OS6.

    Yes.

davidfregoli, I am a little confused on why you want iscsi LUN for the linux server backup.

But if you want ~3 TB total volume (800 GB +2.4 TB => 3.2 TB) the simplest way is just to get 2x3TB drives or 2x4TB drives and protect everything with RAID-1. You can still use iscsi LUN if you want to for the linux server.

Or go with jbod (though doesn't give you RAID-1 protection for the backups). Then your 2 x 2 TB drives will give you enough space, though you will need to put some other shares on the volume that hosts the iscsi LUN.

Note you could set up one iscsi LUN on each jbod disk, and run two backups (perhaps alternating between them). That's similar to RAID-1 protection.

The main issue with jbod is that you need to manually balance the storage between the two disks. That's easiest if you set things up with more/smaller shares.

This is probably what I'll end up doing, 2xJBOD, one NFS mount per drive and rsync one to the other after every backup. thanks guys

I recently purchased a new NAS (3x4TB with raid 1) and looking to refurbish my old readynas nv+ with 2x2tb as a remote backup. I dont care for redundancy on the remote unit and wish to maximize the available terabyte. Thus,  I tried to factory reset the remote unit and set it to flex-raid - raid zero.

I have gone through the process several times now and each time I end up with raid one and capacity of 2tb. Please help. Why wouldn't the raid zero setting with 2x2tb stick for me?

What firmware are you running on the NAS?

Did you try deleting the RAID-1 volume and recreating the one you want?

FWIW, I recommend jbod (two RAID-0 volumes) - otherwise a failure to either drive destroys all your data.

  • Basically I  have the same question. I only have 2 x 3 TB WD Red and would like to have a 1 TB redundant LUN (RAID1) and a 4TB download LUN (RAID0 or JBOD)

Would it be possible in a future firmware version? such a configuration is only a software feature in this type of NAS

LUNs don't have RAID configurations; they are just files on the volumes.  Also, 2x3TB can't give you a 4 TB volume with JBOD, that is physically not possible.  JBOD doesn't span.

Assuming you really meant to say "volumes" - It would be nice if flexraid were a bit more flexible.  Being able to allocate unused disk space into additional volumes would be nice.

        Yes, I did mean volume.

Will that even be a feature to create more thane one volume with different raid settings?
