RN102 write speed is extremely slow - what's the problem?
Hello.
Yesterday I bought a ReadyNAS 102. Before buying I read a lot of tests and I was aware of its advantages and disadvantages and in particular the slow speed writing. However, after connecting and configuring the NAS was very disappointed. Write speeds are extremely low. NAS is connected to the router TP-Link TP-WR841RD and is mounted WD Red 3TB. Regardless of whether it is trying to send data via wi-fi or ethernet cable transmission speed is appalling and is about 1.2MB/s-1.8MB/s. Maximum possible to achieve data transfer rates of 2.6MB/s speeds Such persist during both the data directly to the shared folders in Windows Explorer or by using Total Commander (sending to folders or FTP). It is very frustrating. Another problem is the data transfer speed of USB 3.0 portable drive - here again, the speed is appallingly low.
Do I got a defective copy of the NAS or something is wrong with my network? Although in the case of transfer by USB 3.0 network does not have anything to do with it yet.
Can I have some suggestions and advice from you?
Thank you very much in advance.
edit:
Just reset the RN102 and now transfer from an external drive via USB 3.0 are okay :) Unfortunately transfer via wifi or ethernet is still very very slow - on this issue without changes :(

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCan you send me your logs (see the link in my sig)?
What version of ReadyNAS OS are you running?
What version of Windows?
Have you tried changing ethernet cables? Have you tried a different router/switch?
Welcome to the forum! - piechuAspirantHi!
Thanks for the quick reply!
NAS OS is 6.1.9. For both of my computers (desktop and laptop) I'm using Windows 7.
I have not tried to change cables or do not have, unfortunately, at the moment of access to another router.
I sent a package with logs. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYour router will limit your speed to ~10 MB/s since it is only fast ethernet. So after you solve the main speed issue, you might want to add a gigabit switch or perhaps upgrade the router to a gigabit one.
Did you install readynas remote on the PCs? If so, you might try disabling the leaf VPN adapter. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWell a gigabit switch/router would be worth trying. 100Mbit gear doesn't tend to work as well with NAS units as gigabit stuff.
- piechuAspirantThanks guys.
I realize that my router is 10/100, and I fail to achieve optimal transfer speed from PC to NAS but do not seem to you that even with the switch 100, speeds of the order ~ 1.8MB / s is a bit little? Is there no possibility of transmitting data using this router speeds of the order of 50% of the bandwidth that is 5MB / s? Of course I could be wrong because I'm no expert in this field. At the moment, unfortunately I do not have any router with 10/100/1000 switch to be able to confront him with my current hardware. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredTry a direct-connection and see what speeds you get. That can be used to help rule out a network issue.
- piechuAspirantOk. I'll try and let you know what were the results.
- xeltrosApprenticeJust a little thing here, since you have a new unit, I would advise to do a factory reset if you haven't done it after upgrading. There were some changes to the filesystem with the 6.1.5 that need to be applied via a factory reset. They shouldn't do much difference but it's always good to start clean.
As for the speed, did you copy large file or only word documents ? Is the rebuild process (if two disks) finished ? Is the antivirus turned off ? - piechuAspirantI was copying MP3 files and large MKV files. In the case of mp3 files up to speed is 1.8MB / s, in the case of MKV speed (although, unfortunately, it is difficult for it) 2.6MB / s.
When it comes to reset after the update ... if it involves the loss of data on the disk? - xeltrosApprenticeFor MP3 files, speed in the range of 3MB/s are to be expected since they are small files. However for the MKV you should have at least something close to the maximum fast ethernet speed. I got 23MB/s on my 104 which is basically a 102 with 2 more slots.
Yes, the reset would erase the data. That's why I suggested it right away, before you get your data on the disk. Afterwards it would be harder to do so (even if you should have backups that would allow you to, but the transfer time would be long). That's not an obligation because I think the improvements apply to large volumes or nearly full volumes. Still it is advised.
Did the direct connection test give better results than via the router ?
