RN31400 firmware update in progress (how long will it take?)

Hi,

I have logged into the web interface of our NAS and started a firmware update process. Firmware downloaded first and than it informed me that system need to be robooted. I confirmed and reboot started. First NAS shut down an then it started to boot. It hangs there for 2h now and the display on our NAS says:

Booting...
Updating FW

I don't remember what our firmware was before, but I don't think we updated it all since we bought the NAS (new) in April 2014.

The NAS had 4GB of space in total and under 0.5GB free space. Around 34 snapshots.

I had read on this forum that typical updated shoudn't take more than 10minutes, but then I found this post that suggest it can take way longer in specific cases: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/Readynas-RN314-during-firmware-update-hangs-during-reboot/td-p/1082161

Above post also mentions 'reboot in tech support mode'. I can wait a day for it to reboot, but what to do in case NAS will stay like that, how do I reboot in tech support mode and what I do afterwards?

Any help would be aprreciated. Thank you.

  • Dear Ace88:

    Welcome to the Netgear Community.

I also have a RN314 and my firmware update from OS 6.6.0 to 6.6.1 only took about 5 minutes and the unit rebooted cleanly immediately after that.

That said, I have had instances where the 314 was stuck in the booting mode for quite awile.  I was able to clear it by forcing the unit to power off by holding in the power button until the unit turns off.  I unplugged the electric cord for about a minute and then reconnected it which instantly starts the unit.  At that point, the unit did reboot cleanly.

    Hope that helps.

    Regards,

  •  So I started by disconnecting ethernet cables from the NAS (like in this topic, my NAS is set with static IP as well). However this not helped. Afterwards I did what you suggested dschwartzer and this did the trick. Thank you.

Glad this worked for you.  It would be appreciated if you would formally mark this as Solved so others have the benefit of this suggestion,
