RNAS 314 w/6.5.0 - Mixed Mac 10.11.6 and Win7 - Locked Autocad TMP and excel files, etc
Urgently need some direction on this. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide:
We have windows 7pro and now Mac 10.11.6 users hooking into the RNAS314's shared drives and many of them are using Autocad. Autocad creates a .tmp file while working on a document, and those tmp files are becomming locked (esp on the Mac clients) -- so when the user wants to CTRL-S/save their work, Autocad is not able to take the tmp file and work it into the final destination file.
This is not only happening with autocad files, but now also excel files, etc. becomming locked or inaccessible.
I have searched the forums and found a lot of directions to go on this. Things like:
* In windows - turn off file previews
* user vs share mode security differences
* (Mac) Connecting using AFP, SMB, or CIFS differences (Which one is the best for ReadyOS 6.5.0 and Mac 10.11.6?)
* resetting all file permissions on the NAS (seems drastic!)
* connecting to the NAS using the NAS's admin account vs user accounts in the NAS config
Note that I do have ReadyCloud turned on and snapshots enabled for this volume/share. Wondering if THAT may be grabbing the files and locking them as its processing them, thereby tripping up the clients that are working with those files?
I definitely need a solid answer on this as soon as possible. The client is angry that I got a ReadyNAS if its going to be doing this behavior. Im hopeful this can be solved once and for all.
Finally --if doing an upgrade to 6.5.1 is recommended, I'm a little weary of that! I've read tons of posts on these forums about the upgrade to 6.5.1 going bad. Everything from No IP Address after upgrade (yes my NAS's IP is static too), to "lost all my data". I'm not physically near my client so if something goes wrong, it could be a very bad situation.
Thanks again in advance!

What firmware are you running?
You could try installing smb-plus and disabling oplocks (though that also might be a dead end).
Have you tried this? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/942146

Not sure if you read my post, entirely. I have a whole paragraph on the firmware and a concern about updating to 6.5.1 from my CURRENT at 6.5.0.
I looked at your link to technet and I dont think that applies.
Again, I have Autocad users opening and editing files on the ReadyNAS 314 and the .tmp files that autocad makes become locked and messes up the saving of the files. (Autocad complains, then leaves .tmp files everywhere.. chaos / upset users ensues..)
Let me summarize my questions :- Does Snapshots and/or ReadyCloud mirroring enabled have any affect on files being locked?
- What is the preferred method for OSX/Mac to connect to shares that has no issues? CIFS or SMB? Should I just use AFP instead (which does not use Oplocking)?
- Is there any known issue in 6.5.0 that may be related to this erratic locking of files?
- Is updating to 6.5.1 going to be a bad idea? (I've read war stories on here about losing all data, etc)
- With Windows 7/10 clients ALSO accessing the share, is there a list of things I should change to make sure THEY are not the problem with locking files (Disable Explorer previews? etc?)
I've made this as concise as possible. Please bump the issue if you can - I have growing upset with my clients losing money, chasing .tmp files from Autocad and getting confused.
Thanks in advance

Just to prevent confusion: I am a mod here, but I don't work for Netgear, and I have no special access to Netgear support.
Also, if you are the original purchaser, and purchased between 1 June 2014 and 31 May 2016 then you have free lifetime chat support. You could use that (my.netgear.com is the easiest path).

I did read it, but missed the parenthetical on being at 6.5.0. Sorry.

Looks on target with me. Errors on locked files, even though no one appears to be using them. If your win-7 users have the preview pane enabled, it could be part of the problem I think. Or apply the fix there.

Snapshots: no
"Readycloud mirroring" - not sure what you mean by that. If you mean RAID, then no. If you mean ReadyCloud sync, then I don't know.

No opinion.

I had no issues going from 6.5.0 to 6.5.1 (and then to 6.5.2 beta). I haven't seen much posted here about issues when upgrading from 6.5.0 to 6.5.1.
That said, it's good to have an up-to-date backup when upgrading firmware and/or manipulating disks.
- With Windows 7/10 clients ALSO accessing the share, is there a list of things I should change to make sure THEY are not the problem with locking files (Disable Explorer previews? etc?)Explorer Previews was the point of the technet link. Disabling oplocks is also worth a try.
