Rsync to Freenas

Afternoon all

Ive been trying for 24 hrs to get rsync copying my Duo to a freenas box I have installed, however nothing seems to by copying.

I have a duo with raidar 4.1.6
I have turned the Rsync service on in standard file protocols
I have gone to share listing and checked that rsync is selected for the share im backing up, ive then clicked on the icon and where is talks of usernames and says that the username has not got to be a readynas user, I have but the admin and password for the freenas server as this is where the readynas will access to backup
I have gone to backup and created a new backup job

Step 1
I have for a test said to backup a share and chosen the share name from the dropdown, (it has about 60MB data in)

Step2
I have chosen a remote sync server
Host: \\freenas
Path: data\backups\readynas\

From a windows 7 box I can access that path \\freenas\Data\Backups\ReadyNAS no problems.

For login I have put root and put the roots password (this is a user on the freenas box)
I click test connection and I get a message saying successfully connected to \\freenas

So I know all of this is working so far.

I have for a test put the job to run daily over night between 2am and 4pm as im at work during the day and it didn't do anything.
Ive then made changes so that the job runs over the space of an hour so that I can watch it start and finnish as its only a few mb of data, the job says its started, but when the finnish time passes it keeps on supposedly running, but never stops. I have checked the logs and theres never any data in the log. To stop the running job I click stop, and it says stopping, but the status never changes from stopping, and then I have to reboot the readynas to get it to be back to a non running state.

No data ever gets backed up. When the job is running there is no activity on the readynas or the freenas

Is anyone able to offer some ideas as to why my backups are not running as I would hope?

Many thanks
Sput

  • Hi Stephen

I did post to the freenas forum, and was greeted rather rudely for a first timer I felt, the readynas forums are much friendlier :) I was told that the freenas system was very low on ram and that unless I added ram I shouldn't expect much to work.

I have now increased the systems ram and in the next day or two will be starting to work on the rsync again.

Many thanks for your continued comments and suggestions.

    Happy 2014

  • Hi Stephen,

I have been able to rsync 7 mb of data that was in a folder on the system, however im now trying to rsync my home folder, but am facing troubles, and you asked earilier if the previous problematic folder was a home one. Do home folders not rsync, as ive been to my shares listing to enable rsync and noticed that its not there to be setup.

    Many thanks

  • Evening,

I was struck by an idea at work today, as it seems the home folders cant be rsync-ed, theres nothing to stop me making a new share, which isn't a home folder, and moving the data from the home folder to the new one, and then rsyncing? Is there?

    Cheers

  • Hi Stephen

Sorry for my lack of communications, have been struck down with illness, but on the mend. I have good news, I made a new share, and have rather then set it up with rsync, have set the backup job to copy to a windows server (CIFS) and have had two nights of test data backup correctly.

At the end of the day im looking to back the data up automatically, and im not that bothered by the protocol that is used to do it :) Im going to continue to do some test backups nightly to see how it all pans out, and next weekend I will move all my data from the current home share to this new share and then watch it all backup.

Its looking like we have got it working thanks to your great knowledge :).

I shall keep you posted over the next few days / at the weekend and let you know how it goes, but a million thankyous for your time and ideas and perseverance with once again helping me solve a problem.

    All the best
