Rysnc not working, Win 8.1
Hi,
Sorry in advance for the wall of text, but I'll try to include as much info as possible up front.
I'm bashing my head against the wall trying to set up my rsync backups from a local Windows 8.1 PC in Frontview. Everything worked perfectly in Win 7 and Win 8, does not work in Win 8.1. I can only assume that MS has tightened up some screws, but damned if I can find where! :twisted:
Here's my config;
RAIDiator 4.2.24
Windows 8.1 - Clean install
cwRsyncServer 4.2 (rsync 3.09)
I've been using "Remote: Rsync Server" in Frontview.
Host: PC Name
Path: Pics (name of shared folder on Windows PC that cwRsyncserver is installed as a service on)
Here's my rsyncd.conf
And here's the fstab;
What's infuriating is that if I leave "Path" blank in Front View, I get a successful connection. If I add the Path, connection fails. This suggests that it's the share path on the Windows side that are barring Frontview/Rysnc from getting through. But as I mention, I can't figure out where the security has changed because it all worked perfectly in Win 7/8 (config files copied directly across).
Here's the network path as Windows sees it.

And here's how Frontview sees it;

If someone can give me some ideas on where to check on the Windows side, I'd appreciate it!

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you update to Rsync 3.0.10 does that make a difference?
- @mdgm - I'd like to try, but there's a catch. The folks who roll cwRsync for Windows put out an ancient version for free, and charge $35 for updates and support. I'd happily pay $35 if I knew it worked - but it doesn't look like they offer refunds.
Still, I'm not sure that an Rsync version bump is my answer. The $35 is probably my last resort. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCould you try DeltaCopy replacing Rsync etc. with the latest versions from Cygwin?
- OK - so DeltaCopy is working, although it has it's quirks. It chokes on any exotic characters, so I had to rename some mp3's by foreign artists.
@mdgm - DeltaCopy comes with rsync 3.04, which probably explains the foreign character behavior above. How do I replace the rsync binary safely? Do I just literally install Cygwin, and point it to override the versions in the DeltaCopy folder?
Thanks,
Corey - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you install Cygwin you can copy the files from the Cygwin installation and put them in the Deltacopy directory. Deltacopy should then use those.
- So far so good - thanks man!
Updating DeltaCopy with the latest from Cygwin got rid of all of the Rsync errors, and allowed a huge amount of failed mp3 backups to come across.
For anyone stumbling across from Google, this article has a great writeup on how to update the binaries;

@mdgm - thanks. Will let you know if I hit other snags. - ynohtnaTutorOh boy,
And here I thought it was a great idea to upgrade to windows 8.1
No more front view and no more rync backup pulls from my laptop to ReadyNAS pro.
Will a future firmware update fix this or do I need the workaround posted here (not experienced at it at all)
Thank you. - ynohtnaTutorwell it's not horrible as it just seems to be names resolution issue, where windows 8.1 can't resolve/see the name of the NAS and the NAS can't resolve/see the name of the windows 8.1 machine.
But all other non windows 8.1 is ok with the NAS
