- iProb8GuideI originally had requested the RMA for both drives because I was concerned that the second one would show additional reallocation errors. However, I must confess that I am not so eager to exchange the second drive (drive 4 in my array) at this point. My log shows that on December 26, 2008, the reallocation count went from 0 to 2 on that drive. Since then, though, I have not had any other error messages for Drive 4. In contrast, Drive 1 was up to 41 reallocated sectors as of today, with almost daily increases. So, there's no doubt in my mind about exchanging Drive 1. Still a bit on the fence for Drive 4. In the meantime, knock on wood, I've had no error messages for Drives 2 and 3.
- fearless_foolAspirant@bollar: Thanks for the link to the Google study. One clear and surprising result in their paper: a disk drive's life expectancy is significantly enhanced if you run it hot -- between 35-40C (95-104F). And since you can slow the ReadyNAS fan speeds in software, you should be able to warm up your drives. Anyone want to try?

Frontview shows its resyncing, but it doesn't tell me how long it will take. I've used 38% of the 4,168 GB (X-RAID). Hopefully, it will be done by morning so I can replace Drive 4, which as only generated one sector allocation error (NewEgg has already given me an RMA for drives 1 and 4).
FWIW, the new drive finished syncing at 2:46 a.m. (local time). So, it took approximately 6 hours and 15 minutes to perform the syncing. - mattkimeAspirantis there an approximate safe limit to the number of reallocated sectors. i had a drive go from 1 to 4 yesterday.
is there a good util for the mac to test my readynas? i'd like to do some random reads and writes to see it if will trigger more reallocations. - bonezAspirant

I've still got one of my drives now holding steady at 1 reallocated sector now... for 2 weeks now. I've still got another one handy to swap in if necessary, but I've been running this thing into the ground for 2 weeks and gain more confidence in it each day. (on SD1A firmware). One other drive is worrying me more (jumped to two spin retries after one week, now holding steady for another) - but the ReadyNAS doesn't seem to be as concerned about spin retries as reallocated sectors (ie, doesn't proactively alert me the way it does with reallocated sectors)... which I guess makes me feel at least a little better :) - iProb8Guide

I just swapped out Drive 4 with one of the new ones from Amazon. I expect syncing to be completed by the time I wake up tomorrow morning. Hopefully, both Amazon drives will be without any errors. - iProb8Guide

Drive 4 finished resyncing at 3:34 this morning (local time). Pretty consistent time as to when I had to resync Drive 1. - bonezAspirant

Your times look pretty equivalent to what mine were as well, fwiw. - derrick2AspirantHI All,
i just got 4 1.5TB CC1G drives. . drives are not formatting properly. . RAIDER doesn't seem to pick up the drive after the 4 lights come on at 30s while doing a system reset. then after a while, it just chas C: formatting, and only formats to 2.1TB!
Have emailed and called seagate in the last 2 days, and still have not had an email with the firmware update. . just wondering how long you guys have had to wait for the email with firmware update? Also has anyone else had this problem of not being able to connect to the Readynas when trying to do a system reset to format the drives in XRAID?
thanks!
Derrick

Dell 24" - no8080AspirantHi,
I recently purchase 5 of these drives and they came with firmware CC1G.
After building my Raid5 array (not a readyNAS) the write performance was fine, but the read performance was very poor, about 10Kb/s across my wireless network.
I am assuming it is the firmware issue. So I have just upgraded my firmware to CC1H from Marde's post on page 10. Many thanks for the link.
I have also logged a called with Seagate, hopefully they will supply the CC1J firmware for me as well. If they do I will post a link to it for others.
Thanks
Neil
