Setup email for Virgin Media in UK

Did you try configuring the NAS as TLS with port 465? Most email software will automatically negotiate SSL vs TLS with the SMTP server (though many don't distinguish between TLS and SSL in their settings).
As a workaround you could get a free gmail account, and then set it up to forward mail it receives from the NAS to your virgin media account. Less of a headache then setting up your own proxy server.
