yea, I mis-read your first post thinking you were going to use the 2tb external drive inside.
you definately need at least 1 drive in the internal bay, you can use any old unused sata drive (2tb or less), just be sure you don't have any needed data on it since it will get erased when you insert into the nas bay.
Once your up on an internal drive, you can setup/configure the nas and attach your external drive to one of the usb ports.
