Share invisible to some users

I have a Duo V1 with 4.1.10. It's the office server in a small Mac environment. All Macs running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
AFP protocol is enabled. CIFS is not (since I don't have any PCs).
There are a half-dozen different shares defined on the Duo, and four users configured.
Recently, one of the shares suddenly disappeared for some, but not all of the users.

The share in question is configured with Default Access = Read-only
Three users are provisioned with Write-enabled access: user1, user2 and user3.
If I attempt to access the share from a LAN-connected iMac (using AFP) as user3, the share appears in the list of available shares, and can be mounted R/W. That's as it should be.
However, neither user1 nor user2 can even see the share, much less mount it.

The Duo has another share, configured in a similar manner (Default Access = Read-only).
Only two users are provisioned with Write access: user1 and user2.
Both of these users see the share in the Finder list of available mount points, and can mount it with R/W access, as intended.
User3 can see it in the list, and mount it as RO. (which is correct behavior, since the share has RO as the default).

I've tried rebooting the Duo, with no change.
I've tried deleting users from the ACL for the problematic share and adding them back in, thinking that might reset whatever privileges are screwed up. No change.

Any ideas what might be wrong with the share, and how to fix it? About all I can think of is to copy off all the files stored in the share (many GBs), delete it, recreate it, reassign all the users, then copy all the files back. This will probably mess with all the file creation/modify dates, a side effect I really can't live with.

Thanks for any suggestions or insights.

  • You need to calll support so a telnet expert can log in and delete all the .appledb folders and restart netatalk
  • I would start by going to (SHARE=> SHARE LISTING=> AFP ICON for appropriate Share) and select 'Automatically set permissions' and 'Do not allow acl...' with 'Read' set for both 'Group Rights' and 'EveryOne Rights.' Then, under 'advanced options' for the share, set share folder owner to 'nobody' and share folder group to 'nogroup'. Then select 'Set ownership and permission for existing files...' and hit apply. Let me know if this works. Also, I would remap any/all shares to see if this helps. Thanks.
  • @EBrown,
Thanks!!! You pointed me in the right direction, and now it's Fixed.
A setting for the vanished share on the Advanced Share Permissions page had been changed. Specifically, Share Folder everyone rights was set to Disabled. Not sure how - cosmic rays, perhaps, or maybe a random side effect of upgrading to 4.1.10. I don't remember ever going into the Advanced page, but maybe I did. I changed that setting from Disabled to R/W, and the share reappeared on AFP.

However, what I have on the Advanced page is pretty much the opposite of what you suggested. Instead of Share Folder owner = nobody, and Share folder group = nogroup, I have admin and users. That is the recipe recommended by sphardy at:

    Thanks to all who responded.
