SMB vs NFS: browsing performance
Hi,
I have a NAS with a lot of small files, which I need to search through often. I use a file manager called FAR Manager, but that doesn't really matter. I've enabled NFS client in my windows workstation, and mounted same Share using SMB and using NFS as two different drive letters.
Then I did a file search using filename only on both. NFS returned results around 5 times faster than SMB.
The actual transfer speed is pretty much the same, so that's not a problem.
Question: is it possible to achieve same browsing/listing performance from SMB?
Thanks.

NFS is a native Linux file system and SMB is not, I'm not surprised that NFS is faster, but am a bit that it's that much faster. The fact the SMB is not case sensitive where NFS is may be making a big difference when it comes to a search.

NFS generally is faster when you are reading/writing lots of small files, so I'm not surprised that it is also faster for browsing. https://ferhatakgun.com/network-share-performance-differences-between-nfs-smb/ is one of several google reports on this.

Ok, in that case, how can I make NFS show UTF filenames correctly? SMB shows them fine.
