[SOLVED] Deleted files keep taking up storage space
Hi
I am a new member who recently joined the NETGEAR ReadyNAS Family. I apologize for my somewhat bad English and for not finding a more proper sub-forum for this question.
A week ago I bought a RN104 (FW 6.0.8 ) and a 4 TB hdd. After rearranging quite a lot of data I realized that deleting files wouldn't give back the space. First I thought that it was since I deleted files through Windows 7 which only moved the files to a new folder called recycle bin on the NAS. So I deleted the recycle bin-folder through the webUI. This only lead to the files completely disappearing without releasing the space they had taken up.
After using windirstat the space on the drive is divided between my media files (~2,1 TB) I put on the hdd, the free space (~850 GB) and the unusable part of the hdd (~560 GB).
The webUI shows that 2,66 TB is used and 850 GB is free. I have really no idea how to retake the 560 GB I have lost.
I have tried to defrag and scrub the drive but that hasn't resulted in anything. If you need more information I will happily answer any questions.
I would be really glad if someone could help me.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe OS6 file system automatically snapshots the data, which gives you some protection if you accidentally delete something. If you select the "shares" tab on the web interface, you will see how many snapshots has stored for each folder. These snapshots take up disk space of course.
The only method I know of for deleting these snapshots is not obvious in the UI, and it is also tedious. From the shares page, click "browse". Then click on "recovery mode" (second icon from the left). Then select the share.
You'll get a bunch of snapshot icons, with dates and times. If you right-click on a snapshot icon, there will be a delete option. This doesn't delete your main data, just the snapshot.
So try that, and see if you get data back.
BTW, you can control the snapshot creation on the share page (click on the share and select "properties"). The relevant settings are "continuous protection" and the interval pull-down. Though changing these settings does not delete any existing snapshots. - davexyzAspirantI had something similar but on Readynas NV+ V2
What actually happened was that the files disappeared but the space was still used. When I allowed hidden files to be viewed ther was a hidden deleted files folder. Once I deleted that I got the space back - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredShould have thought of snapshots. Snapshots are automatically managed so that they are no longer taken once free space gets below a threshold, I think.
Most users should find snapshots quite useful. - veritacsAspirantThank you all for your help!
The problem was as StephenB said, the snapshots. I am extremly grateful for your tips.
Thanks for the accurate and quick answers! - arnomcAspirantmy readynas reach 78% used space so I erased 400GB of data that doesn't really need to be on my NAS. So I found the same problem as decribed here and I erased the old snapshot of the folder I deleted. But the free space didn't increased at all. I wondered how I could tell the NAS to use this space to avoid receiving the email to warn me about the 70% reached.
I just tried a cleaning of the volume (path is System > Volume then a clic no the volume and on the drop down menu "clean").
But I looks like this cleaning will be very very slow... :(( (0.02% in 2 minutes...so more than 100hours :/ )
EDIT : I continued to play around in the GUI and after many clic on "actualise" the freespace was updated after a while. Maybe there is a delay to wait for.
