[SOLVED] How to purge deleted shares? #23972766
Hello,
In the process of integrating in my office network a new RN 102 I found expedient to create on the RN 102 three shares to where I could copy data to move it from a RN NV+ to a RN Duo. The copy of data went smoothly, but then I noticed the following:
As I find more expedient to run a single backup job to backup all of the shares on the RN 102 to a single share on the RN NV+, is there a way to force the removal of all the content in the .purge folder? that would let me reclaim approx. 300 GB of free space on the RN 102 and cut down the time needed to backup the data from the RN 102 to the RN NV+.
The RN 102 is running RAIDiator 6.1.9, the RN NV+ is running RAIDiator 4.1.8 and the RN Duo is running RAIDiator 4.1.13.
Update: the issue has been solved by Netgear support by remotely accessing the NAS and deleting the folders contained in the .purge folder.

- I deleted the three shares on the 102 directly from the Shares pane (without deleting the folders and files first) and noticed that the reported disk usage didn't decrease. I didn't give it much thought as I expected it would take a while, or a reboot maybe, for all the data to be actually deleted from disk, or maybe it could be a glitch of the web interface
- later, while running a backup of the entire volume of the RN 102 to the RN NV+ I noticed that three hidden folders had been created in the backup share on the RV+: ._share, .apps and .purge. I then noticed that the .purge folder contained all the the shares that I had previously created and deleted on the RN 102, with all the folders and files inside

- The issue has been successfully solved by Netgear support, by remote access. My thanks to everybody for the help and tips, especially to the Netgear people both on the forum and support.

- vandermerweMasterDid you have continuous protection (snapshots) active on the 3 shares on the 102?
You ought to update the firmware on the NV+. - ToAmLoAspirant

I don't remember disabling it so I think it's safer to assume that I did, but no snapshots show on the timeline so either I deleted them (or got deleted together with the shares) or I can't see them. You ought to update the firmware on the NV+.
I did update it to the latest RAIDiator 4.1.13 but I had issues with the share security mode so I downgraded to 4.1.8 to get the old security mode back. - vandermerweMaster1. Share security mode is not advised anymore. You should change to user security mode.
2. It is possible that when you deleted the shares the snapshots were not deleted. How do you view the timeline if the shares were deleted?
You have a couple of possible solutions:
1. If you have all the data in the shares securely on another device, you could factory default the 102, recreate the shares then copy the data back. Then factory default the nv+ and redo the backup. I would suggest backing up each share on the 102 to a matching share on the nv+ rather than all into one share. It's simpler. What are you doing with the duo?
2. You could contact support. - ToAmLoAspirantThank you for the tips, I'm currently backing each share on the 102 to a matching share on the NV+ as you suggested in order to have the data backed up as soon as possible.
As we expect to keep working for a long time with a customer, we decided to allocate the whole capacity of the Duo (1GB) for his data so that we don't have to worry about running out of space any time soon.
I still would like to reclaim the wasted 300 GB from the 102 without having to go the trouble and time of a factory default and restoring of the remaining 670 GB. Before I try contacting support, any further tips? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredHow recently did you purchase this 102?
- ToAmLoAspirantIt was purchased last week
