I was thinking that you'd connect both the NAS and the laptop to the extender. A multiport extender serves as an ethernet switch to the local devices.
I believe a Netgear WNDR3700 can function as an extender/repeater (or any other Netgear gigabit router). A single port fast ethernet extender combined with a gigabit switch would also work.
Your idea can work also, though I haven't tried to set up the two ethernet ports on different networks. I think there is an issue with having different gateway addresses (at least there are a couple of older posts where that was a problem).
