ssh-agent and ReadyNAS Duo
We need to run cron jobs from a ReadyNAS Duo accessing servers securely through SSH. The best way to run unsupervised jobs is to use ssh-agent to store the private key(s) in memory and share the public key(s) with each of the external servers.
To add the keys to the ssh-agent daemon we need to run ssh-add. This is command is not available in ReadyNAS Duo.
Searching the forum, someone had posted the same question for the NV+: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=61530
The only answer in that post suggests using apt to reinstall ssh. I have tried this and lost ssh access to this Duo box, briefly inducing panic throughout the office. Fortunately, a firmware reinstall fixed the issue without any loss of data albeit with considerable loss of time.
I registered on the forum with the express purpose of sharing my experience so that other people do not fall into the same trap. Unfortunately, after a registration process that is more cumbersome than it needed to be, I'm not allowed to reply to that post because it has been closed.
Seen that I can not do it myself, a moderator should reply to that post sharing this experience, or at the very least delete the post so that it stops misleading people.
As for the ssh-agent problem, if anyone has clues on how to fix it, I'm much obliged.
Thanks
