Swapped out 2 x 4TB WD Red HDs from failing RNDuoV2 and installed into new RNDuoV2

Hi Sandshark & StephenB

1) Sandshark

Last September,  29th to be exact, you gave me some good advice as a solution to my failing RNDuoV2 problem.

That advice was:-

"b) Try to buy another RNDuoV2.0 (which are now extremely rare) and put the two WD Red Plus HDs, currently in the failing V2, in the new V2."

I have now fully implemented your advice and, to some extent, it has worked, as I can now see my plex files again (not tried to play/view them yet) but I cannot access this new RNDuoV2's dashboard.

The attached screen print will help to explain the new problem I am now facing.

1) OK, starting from the top of the screen print, and ignoring the yellow text for now, you will see that RNDuoV2 "Name" does not reflect the device's MAC address, i.e. the Name should be nas-BE-DB-33, not the old name of the previous failing device.

2) The "Firmware" is 5.3.7, even though 5.3.13 is installed (I believe) on the disks the disks I put into this new (old) device.

3) Finally, the yellow texts. I believe that if I can get FW5.3.13 installed (again) this should clear up the problem.

However, at the moment, I cannot get into the dashboard to upgrade the firmware (I have FW5.3.13 on my PC for just such an event) even though I have the "apache utility" (the software that allows the RNDuoV2's dashboard to run/work in Win 10/11) fully installed on V2's disks.

So, I guess my question is, can I find another way to gain access to the dashboard on my new (old) RNDuoV2, possibly without affecting or messing up my HDs.

2) StephenB

I would also warmly welcome any input you would have on my current set of problems.

Awaiting your suggestions and/or solutions.

Cheers for now

UK Bob

That is the correct identification.  All of the configuration of the device, including any name you gave it, is stored on the drives and used by the new unit.  The name will be based on the MAC address only if you haven't re-named it.

I cannot see your screen prints until a moderator approves them.  You would have been much better off using a blank drive to initialize the NAS and install the same firmware version before you put in your drives.  I don't know what logic the V2 units use when there is a difference in versions between what's on the drives and in flash -- the latest version "wins" or flash takes priority.  It sounds like it may be the latter.  But I think your best next step is to remove the drives with power off, initialize with a blank drive (any size) and do a firmware update. then put your drives back in with power off and see if it now boots.

      Cheers Sandshark

I will try that out as soon as I can.

I don't think the yellow text is related to the firmware being detected.  It is saying that the RAID array is not redundant.  It's not clear why that is, since RAIDar isn't saying that it is syncing.

What error are you getting when you try to access the dashboard.

It sounds like you can access the files on this NAS with SMB/Windows File Sharing.  Is that the case?

If it is the case, have you backed up the data on the NAS?  I think making sure the data is safe is higher priority than accessing the dashboard and updating the firmware.

      Hi StephenB

First of all, I must apologise for not replying earlier but, as you can guess, this is the busiest time of of the year.

Moving on, I will now answer your questions in the order they were asked.

Q1) What error are you getting when you try to access the dashboard?

A1) Using my Win11 PC, with the anti-virus switched off, I get the following error page:

Q2)  It sounds like you can access the files on this NAS with SMB/Windows File Sharing. Is that the case?

A2)  Yes it is, I can access, add to and play all my plex files.  Which is my main reason for buying this (used) RNDuo v2.0 device.

Finally, you wrote: "If it is the case, have you backed up the data on the NAS? I think making sure the data is safe is higher priority than accessing the dashboard and updating the firmware."

I totally agree with your assessment, accessing  the dashboard and it's admin facilities is a nicety I can do without, and so I plan to backup my data as soon as I can.

To you StephenB, Sandshark and the rest of the Netgear Community

Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

      Regards

      UK Bob

The issue here is that your NAS doesn't support TLS 1.2, and browsers now require it.

You can still access the dashboard using firefox. You need to set security.tls.version.min to 1 (browse to about:config and search for the setting).  Note the value it is set to now, before you change it to 1.

Once you are able to access the dashboard, then download and install this add-on:

That will add TLS 1.2 support to the NAS, so you can access it from any browser.  Then you can change the security setting in firefox back to the original value.
