Time for a drive replacement, but which one?
Weekend was busy with emails from NAS about increasing uncorrectable error counts on one drive (last showed 728). I've got a replacement drive, but I can't seem to find a way to flash the LED for the disk, and it hasn't actually been failed by the NAS yet. So silly question... is drive 1 at the top or bottom of a 516?

- btaroliProdigyfound this, but it says nada about drive numbering
http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... pr2013.pdf - RXLuminaryThis is how I determine which drive it is: You may check on the disk logs the specific serial number of the drive that is failing then go to System>Volumes then just point the cursor to a drive and it will display the serial number of it for you to determine which one is failing.
However, it would be easy that after you have checked the specific serial number of the drive that is failing from the disk logs, you may just power off your NAS then try to pull-out one- drive at-a-time to verify the serial number of the disk that is failing. - vandermerweMasterDrive 1 is at the top, but Ixa's method is more precise
- btaroliProdigyWell, the whole point is that I shouldn't have to POWER OFF the NAS to do the drive replacement. The email notifications already tell me the serial# of the drive, so if I shut it down and pull each one to compare I can find it that way. But that first requires shutdown, and seems silly for a hot swap. :)
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserNow that you know drive 1 is at the top, perhaps label the disk trays by slot.
- Drive 1 definitely at the top on my 316...it's empty on my set-up as I installed my drives from the lowest slot upwards and only have 5 drives.
- vandermerweMasterYou don't have to power off.
Go to Sytem/Volumes and hover above each disk in the picture of the chassis. A popup will appear with drive info, including serial number.
I don't think Ixa's second method is necessary. - btaroliProdigyThe hovering wasn't working, so I was in the volume properties looking at the disks... but there isn't a visual correlation there. I've refreshed and hovering over the summary display is working now. Shouldn't require hovering to see that, but whatever. Knowing 1 is at the top was enough. The notification that fired when it was removed quickly confirmed the serial number. Rebuilding now.
Thanks! - RXLuminaryI agree with vandermerwe...the channel number where the drive is placed is also indicated when you hover above each disk on Sytem>Volumes.
