Time Machine setup help
I have an Ultra 6 with two free bays. I am wondering if it is possible to add one (or two) drives to the spare bay/s but keep them independent from the main RAID and dedicate it/them to Time Machine backup. The reasoning being that I would like to be able to remove the Time Machine backup drive/s from the Ultra 6 when we go on holiday and put it/them in the safe for security.
If there is already a topic on this, apologies, I did look around.
Thank you

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAre you using X-RAID2 or Flex-RAID?
Do note that SATA connectors are designed for limited pulls so this may not be a good idea.
A better idea may be to get a 2-bay NAS and backup to both NASes using Time Machine (from Mountain Lion you can select multiple backup destinations and it will rotate between available ones each hour). Then put the 2-bay NAS in a safe for security when you go on holidays.
Welcome to the forum! - garfybedsAspirantThat is a fair point regarding the SATA connectors. I also noticed there is an option for a USB share - so could I create the Time Machine backup on a USB attached drive ? This could then be stored in the safe and, as you suggest, duplicated within the Ultra 6 ?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredNo, Time Machine backups to volume C on the NAS are all that is supported though with SSH you could hack it to backup somewhere else.
- garfybedsAspirantOk. That points me back to getting a networked hard drive for the Time Machibe and putting that in the safe. I could still dual it with the Ultra 6. It's a shame I can't use the USB port to run a Time Capsule drive
