Time To Talk ReadyNas Duo Help

I'm not network expert! I own a readyNAS Duo, and I have a problem.

Description-
1. A few weeks ago readyNAS sent me an email indicating: Number of bad sectors on disk 2 is growing.
2. Upon review Disk 2 light was flashing and NAS became unresponsive
3. I removed disk 2 from the NAS, I also removed Disk 1 but put it back in.
4. After 10 mins or so I had access to Disk 1
5. Few days later trying to access NAS gives me the following error: Windows cannot access //server/folder. Check the spelling .... error code x80070035 (sic)

I bought two more disks with then intention of replacing the bad disk. But now I cannot access and don't know how to fix.

Help would be much appreciated.

  • I don't remember if it was powered on or not? I think I turned it off before I removed the disks, not sure about reinserting them.

    Looking at your guide I have the Duo V1 based on the layout of the rear. What is the significance of this?

    "wipe disks when reinserted" WTF! What kind of idiot would have a feature such as this?? I mean I think the whole purpose of these damn things is to preserve data loss in case one disk fails you can swap it out or have a back up. If you had data backed up on another disk and put it in NAS, what good would it do to wipe it, (especially without warning)

    All I know is that the disk worked that night. the next day it couldn't find the file folders.

    What do I need to do to figure this out?? I am really stressed.

    The NAS assumes that when you hot-install a disk you are putting in a new replacement. It rebuilds the RAID array from the remaining disks when that is done. So its not good to try two in rapid succession, since the RAID array can't be rebuilt if there are no remaining disks.

    What is in the frontivew logs? What shares does it show?
  • Well I removed both disks and then just re-inserted Disk 1.

    I actually cannot access frontview, I cannot remember password and for some reason its not sending the email when I attempt password_recovery. ??

    Sorry, I know this is a pain. I appreciate the help

    You haven't yet told us if you have a duo v1 or a duo v2.

    If you reinserted disk 1 with the NAS running, then if should be using the factory default password (either netgear1 or password, depending on your model). All data would be gone.

    The default passwords don't work. After doing the password_recovery and providing the hint to recover says the netgear software says "email sent". However, nothing ever arrives in my email?? Please advise

    What do you mean "gone" !

    Is there by chance an expert I can take this to in the DFW area who can assist me live??

    "gone" means that the NAS would reformat the drive when it was inserted.

    You can try powering down the NAS and removing drive 1. Then hook it up to a PC (a USB adapter is ok) and see if Linux Reader can see the data. Here's the download link: http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/
  • Ok I will give that a shot. Where do I find a suitable USB adapter for that disk? Just amazon?

    I still have Disk 2 that I removed because of the "increasing bad sectors" warning. Can I put it back into the NAS alone by itself, and try to read it? (without wiping the damn thing of course!)

    Still can believe whoever at NetGear thought it would be a good idea to automatically wipe anything. Seriously, who would think that was good functionality to add?!

    You can try putting in disk 2 by itself (in slot 2) and booting up.

    Amazon is a good place to buy a USB-SATA adapter. Make sure you buy one that includes disk power. A USB-3 model is a safer purchase, as some of the USB 2 models are limited to 2 TB drives.
