Tweaking RAIDar's Java jre
Can someone maybe answer my question at:
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=129&t=63963#p388011
I've done this tweak twice now. It does seem to work fine! Just wondering what to do with the now 'old' jre folders/directories. I do plan to update RAIDar's jre each time Java is updated. BTW, RAIDar v4.3.4 runs quite spiffy using Java v7upd17 ATM. :D

- chirpaLuminaryThere is a 4.3.5 release as well from early 2012, but it was never posted, only a few small bug fixes. There is a long standing thread requesting NTGR release an updated RAIDar without exploitable JRE, but nothing has come from it: viewtopic.php?f=129&t=59217
Going forward, they are now using http://readycloud.netgear.com for discovery. - NASNoob11Aspirantchirpa,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am aware of the frustrations and concerns of using the Java jre within RAIDar. No. I never heard about the version 4.3.5. I will poke around some more. Your second share leaves me completely clueless! I don't get it.... :shock:
More to my question, is it safe to delete my 'old' jre folders now cluttering up RAIDar? - chirpaLuminaryYa its safe to remove those folders. If it ever broke, you can re-install it.

The new (just announced) ReadyNAS line doesn't need RAIDar, the readycloud link Chirpa included lets you discover your local NAS, etc.NASNoob wrote: Your second share leaves me completely clueless! I don't get it.... :shock: - NASNoob11Aspirant@Chirpa,
Thanks. I thought so, but am happy to have my 'guess' confirmed. I have cleaned two machines without any quibbles. :D
@StephenB,
Chirpa shared the link. I read your share, but now I am more confused. I really had no future plan to create a private 'cloud' in my home.
Worse, what I have read leads me to the a nas routine connecting to, and, using something external to my home router/gateway. This I do not allow.
ATM I do not do 'cloud' anything. I will watch this and see how it shakes out. Sorry, I remain happily confused! :? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserRAIDar still works with the new products [and generally isn't needed even with the old ones]. ReadyCloud and the other cloud services are optional, and easily disabled.
- chirpaLuminary
From what I've seen, even when 'disabled' they are still phoning home constantly. Try on a 6.0, not using any 'cloud' apps, and check 'lsof -i' on a console, readycloud.netgear.com is still connected constantly, even when setup wizard in an Offline mode.ReadyCloud and the other cloud services are optional, and easily disabled. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
They are enabled on my system right now, and there are connections to readycloud.netgear.com, red.netgear.com, and a couple of connections into the amazon cloud. When I have a chance I'll disable them all, and take another look.chirpa wrote:

With all cloud services disabled, there is still an https connection to readycloud.rcbrokerd 1257 root 2u IPv4 4759 0t0 TCP RN102:54808->readycloud.netgear.com:https (ESTABLISHED)
Adding ReadyNAS remote gives the following additional connections:leafp2p 1216 root 5u IPv4 12898 0t0 TCP RN102:34638->206.16.42.237:https (ESTABLISHED)

Antivirus definitions updated during this test, making me wonder if the readycloud connection is being used to push Antivirus updates and notification of new firmware. That is just speculation though. - chirpaLuminaryThe system pulls AV defs from ctmail.com on schedule.
Hello, ctmail.com is a domain used by Internet security software and devices. For more information please contact info@support.ctmail.com
http://www.commtouch.com/antivirus-for-nas/
I believe that is the same AV engine used on the STM/UTM product line.
More info on the 'avdu' download process is listed here: viewtopic.php?p=393467#p393467
