Ultra 4 no longer archiving Tivo files

As of 2/16, my Ultra 4 has been unable to successfully transfer any Tivo files. Nor can I via Web or Tivo Desktop. According to the Tivo Community Forums, this appears to be a widespread problem, evidently a bug in the Tivo firmware. (I'm running Tivo HDs; not sure what other units are affected.) A patch to the Curl configuration file will fix the problem if you're running Tivo Desktop under Windows. The freeware program kmttg has been updated with a workaround. But to date, I know of no way of fixing or patching my ReadyNAS to ignore the problem (something about not accepting cookies, I guess, which leads to a "session ID missing" message).

Has anyone else noticed the problem and (more importantly) discovered a work-around? Any chance for a ReadyNAS firmware update to address it?

  • Thanks for the thread, the update, and the extra info on the dump/prune howto -- although I lost a few shows that I was aggressively deleting, I'm now able to archive again, as well as re-archive the shows I missed.

When things like this happen, it makes me wish that my ReadyNAS would auto-update instead of me having to discover deficiencies like this months later, and to apply a patch then.
  • OK, I got hit by this Tivo bug, but didn't notice it until yesterday. I installed the patch, and archiving is working again, but I still don't fully understand how to rearachive the shows that didn't archive properly the first time. (many of my shows are of course lost forever since I deleted them from the tivo, but others are still available on the tivo hard drive)

If I delete the bad 1 KB .Tivo and.nfo files from the readynas by mounting the tivo share on a windows PC, deleting the files from Windows, and then telling the tivo to rescan the database, this doesn't do it. The shows don't seem to rearchive.

Do I need to create a dump.txt file on the Readynas, and manually copy the shows I wish to rearchive to a new file called prune.txt? This will take a while for me to do, I imagine, because I will have to manually select the entries corresponding to the shows that "archived" since Feb 16. Unless there is a way to sort dump.txt by date or file size, this may be time consuming. (I haven't tried it yet). Is this what is necessary?

In the future is there a way to fully delete an archived show from Readynas other than by using a text editor and playing with the dump.txt and prune.txt files?

    Thanks!!

Yes, currently using dump/prune is the only way to force re-archival. The listings in dump.txt will be sorted by show title, then episode number, then recording time.
  • OK, thanks! I had maybe 100 shows that "archived" as 1 KB pseudo-files, and it took a while to select these entries from dump.txt and copy them in to prune.txt. Maybe there was an easier way. A sortable file, like export.csv, which I could have loaded in to Excel, that could be used in lieu of prune.txt would have been nice. (I haven't quite figured out what import.csv does)

Be that as it may, I very much appreciate the availability of a fix; as of yesterday, the latest tivo firmware for my Premiere XL still had the bug, so without the readytivo/readydlna update I would have been dead in the water. Thanks Skywalker for making a fix available.

I did loose a bunch of shows that I had deleted from the Tivo (but life goes on), I will certainly try to follow the forums and double check that things are working more often!

Yeah, it's unfortunate that this issue came up. However, on the bright side, the latest version of ReadyTiVo will be much better at catching errors like this, so you shouldn't get any more 1KB pseudo files in the future, even if new bugs like this get introduced.
