Ultra 6 - Disk 1 Dead, Disk 2 Dead? (#22070141) (Solved)

I had one of my drives die on my Ultra 6, Disk 1. I've always replaced any disk I saw going bad before it "died". When I replaced the dead disk it started to resync. I let that run all night. This morning the volume status said, Disk 1 = Spare, Disk 2 = Dead.

I turned the machine off. I wanted to check a few things before I posted here so I turned it back on to see which Raid Level I was running at which is X-RAID 2. It began the resync of Disk 1 again (the new disk) and Frontview shows Disk 2 as "fine".

Is this an issue of some type of "fatal' occurance?

If Disk 1 resyncs okay and Frontview indicates that Disk 2 is "dead" again have I lost data?

I have no more spare disks so I've ordered 2 more. After this resync I intend to shut things down until my new disks arrive.

For RAIDiator-x86 4.2.16+ GPT partitioning is used as that is needed for disks larger than 2TB. Getting that error indicates the PC can see the disk.

Though if you really want to see the partition table try:

    # sgdisk -p /dev/sdb
  • I have one question I hope someone can help me with before I begin cloning.

I have 2 disks to choose from for a target disk.

One is from the failed ReadyNAS resync so I'm sure there are some partitions on it.
The other is completely blank. It's not formatted. It's a virgin disk.

Does it matter which I use? Will Linux do a proper preparation to receive data from the damaged disk?

If I need to do the prep work I'm not sure what (or how) to do it.

I am struggling with understanding what Linux is telling me.

  • I also have an Ultr6 with 0ne dead drive and was trying to use a ST32000542AS 2TB drive to replace a ST32000DL003 that said is dead. NAS does not see drive to rebuild on hot swap, should I use different make of Drive? Thanks Kurt
  • Rebuild Successful, Power Off NAS, insert re-purposed drive, start NAS, re-sync. Looks like if the drive is not new, you can not hot swap? Found in manual , that previous used drives may require a reboot (I deleted all partitions on my drive, thought it should look new). Back up and running.
