Ultra2 Alert email setup

My newly installed ultra2 setup is showing an interesting non-send of alert email issue. Specifically, 'send a test message' does not arrive at the specified email in-box.
The related Raidar utility version installed is 4.2.27, and the browser it uses is Mozilla Firefox version 37.0.2

I've rebooted the NAS OS once (what a painful process that is) as part of the installation, to restore the standard defaults. Using raidar and selecting setup, after logging in and using the next button to get to the relevant page to setup alert emails I've inserted my email address as 'alert contact 1', and because the service provider is not one of the default ones listed, I've tried the "internal" setting and "custom" settings. I noticed that the internal setting did not allow insertion of an email user identity and password (which the software manual suggests should be the case: see pages 80/81), and also that the custom setting allows that info to be inserted. But neither setting worked: the send test message button generated a successful message sent box, but those test messages have never arrived in the email user in-box. Several times over separate log-in cycles. I've applied the provider/user data and the correct email address appears when I next log-in, but there's no messages being received.

The mail program is Mozilla thunderbird version 31.6.0.

While the device is running fine with 2 new 2Tb disks in the default configuration, I'd like to get this alert quirk sorted out and working properly. Why doesn't the test message work?

Have you configured the correct port and correct setting as to whether to use TLS?

    Welcome to the forum!
  • Hi,

Configured port - no. set TLS - no. The manual (ReadyNAS_Home_RAID4.2SW_en_29-Sep-11.pdf) on the pages I referenced just says to enter the email address and password in the related fields, which I did. It does not say anything at all about these 'advanced' options - default off/blank. So I left them alone.

From the T'bird Tools/account settings/server settings for the specific account/user ID:
Port no - available (not changed from default)
transmit server - ID available (smtp.<provider_name>.com etc)
connection security - none (of the 3 available options)
authentication method - encrypted password (of the 5 options available). One of those is a TLS certificate, not checked.

Well it sounds like you may need to use the advanced options.

Also note that we don't support two-factor authentication. If your account uses two-factor authentication you will need to allow less secure apps and configure an application specific password.
  • Yes. What was getting me confused was the detail in the server settings heading for the incoming mail account, versus the details for outgoing server (SMTP). I had been focussing on the server details for the incoming account. heh. An outgoing email clearly would need the data for the smtp server. Once I realised that, I setup 'Custom' the mail account user ID (the address) and password, and then (advanced options) entered the smtp server address and port number, and ticked the TLS box. The from box here got populated automatically from the user address. Clicked on the send test message button, got the sent Ok box and (music) thunderbird chiming with incoming mail which turned out to be the NAS test message.

Back to the raidar setup page, applied the details that worked, and after the save confirmation, exited.

    Thanks a bunch.
