Mar 27, 2017Understanding the boot process of ReadyNAS
After downloading the logfiles recently in the "bios-ver.log" I noticed the following
U-Boot 2011.12-gec25d27-dirty (Oct 26 2015 - 16:56:14) Marvell version: v2011.12 2014_T2.0p1
06/23/2015 ReadyNAS-104 V2.0
To learn more about the box I would like to get answers to the following questions:
(1) Is that BIOS part of the firmware or does this mean, that the ReadyNAS firmware is not booted right away when switching on the RN104 and there is a BIOS which needs to successfully boot before the firmware can finally take over?
(2) With "Yes" to (1), is it possible to boot into this BIOS directly to understand its current configuration? In this case, what would be the interface to see its settings?
(3) With "No" to (1), how can one read and display the configuration settings of that BIOS?
(4) Can the settings of that BIOS be changed at all and how would that be done?
1. Well on ARM it's a U-Boot not a BIOS. The U-Boot environment tells the NAS where to look for the kernel etc. on the flash, then during the boot process it switches to booting off the disks.
2, 3 and 4. You can brick your system messing around with this. You shouldn't need to make any changes to this. You may find sites like natisbad.org provide helpful information for you.

Thanks a lot for quick answer.
I have no intention to mess around with this. Just want to understand what is going on.
