Upgrading from Duo V1 to an RN102

Having had more problems than you can shake a stick at, I have ordered a pair of WD 3Tb Red drives and an RN102 NAS. Am I able to just pull the drives out of my Duo and expect them to work immediately in the RN102, or is it likely to try to format them for me? The other option is to use the 3Tb and sync them individually, but then the same question applies.

I'm not sure if I can do anything with the Duo as I have started getting "system error" when trying to access it remotely. I am hoping that I will be able to restart it later and get some response from it.

Problems all started when I had a drive screaming and swapped it out for a WD Green I had in a PC. It appeared to format OK and sync, but then I lost all CIFS access and sometimes it even claimed that the discs were empty.

Can I remove the drives from my Duo, factory reset the NAS and then put the drives back safely?

  • Oh and it is running 4.1.13 and will not contact the update server for the 4.1.14 even though all the network info is correct. It also will not allow me to edit users nor delete them. Attempting to upgrade remotely fails the upload and now I have "System Error"

The RAID for at is different. You will need to copy your data across your network.

    Do you have a backup?

The whole point of a factory reset is to wipe the disks, create the partitions, format them, install the OS onto the disks etc. Trying to do a factory default with the disks removed achieves nothing.
  • Al I have is the drives in the NAS, plus another single drive with the same data. This is the one that was screaming. I don't have anything else with the capacity to take the backup, hence buying the new RN102 and drives.

The idea of the factory reset was to set the OS all back to standard as it will not allow me to change any settings. I am doing my best not to lose all that data, which is why my idea was to default it with the drives out. Once I can talk to it, then I suppose I can just setup a backup between the units onto the 3Tb drives. If I still can't talk to it, I supose I will have to find another Duo V1 to access the data?

mdgm's point is that you literally can't factory reset the v1 with no disks installed. "factory reset" means "do a fresh factory install on the disks". With no disks, it cannot be done.

If you can't access the NAS at all, then you could try powering it down, connecting disk 1 to a PC with SATA or a USB adapter. Linux Reader (http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/) is a free software package that you can use to copy the data off. You could also try Netgear's paid support (support.netgear.com).
  • Thankyou Stephen, I now understand the help I have been given. I thought that the OS would be in Flash and be used from there, rather than a Windows like disc install of the OS. Anyway, after an OS re-install, I was able to talk to the NAS again and access the data. Only issue now is that I can't access Frontview from the remore client as it is expecting the hostname to be NAS rather than ReadyNAS. I have written a post in the correct section with that query.

Once again, many thanks for the help and patience.

I don't know what limitations there are with Remote host names. But you can also set up a secondary https port in the NAS, and forward that port in the router. Then you can access the NAS with https remotely.
