USB drive no longer recognised

I have been connecting the same external USB drive to my ReadyNAS to perform backups and now after the latest firmware update to 6.10.10 it is now no longer recognised. This now makes it impossible for me to backup my files using the backup feature.

I have followed the instructs to connect a new drive and are getting the same result.

Even though this product is now legacy and no longer supported, Netgear shouldn't be disabling any of the functions that have been used since purchase.

I would appreciate that support look into this instead of suggesting that I purchase a new NAS.

Yes, this is the problem - a completely full OS partition.

Do you know how to find the largest files?

You can try moving into the top level folders - for instance cd /var

Then try this: du -hsx * | sort -rh | head -10

  • Hi Sandshark , thanks for your reply.

Can you please direct me to some instructions on how I can free up the space in the OS partition?

The first step is to confirm that is the problem.

Is SSH enabled on the NAS?

Support is no longer available, and it's been a long time since Netgear responded to a post here.  They wouldn't tell you to purchase a new ReadyNAS, since there are none.  The most recent ReadyNAS platforms were launched in 2017.

    1. What model NAS do you own?
    2. Have you tried all the USB ports on the NAS?
    3. How are you formatting the drives?

      Stephen, thanks for your reply.

      It's a ReadyNAS RN102.

I'm connecting to the NAS using a mac and in finder I can now see the USB drive and it's contents but it is not appearing in the NAS console and so I can't run any of the backup jobs.

The drives were formatted as ntfs and were last working on the 12th December 2024.

Thanks.  What firmware is it running?

Have you tried all three USB ports on the NAS (including the USB 2.0 port on the front)?
