Used ReadyNAS 314 - Mainboard RMA

I've had my 314 for a couple of years now (so out of warranty), and I noticed yeterday that the network drive on my desktop wasn't on-line.  I looked over on the shelf and the unit was off (it had been working the day before).  I pressed the power button, but nothing happened.  I pulled the power plug and plugged it back in and the fan came on and it seemed to be starting up.  I got the  opening message on the display (NETGEAR storage welcome) but then it shut down after about 3 seconds.  Pressing the power button didn't do anything, and I can consistently get this behavior only by unplugging and plugging in the power adapter.  None of the buttons have any effect (even holding "reset" in when I try to power it up).  I have a second unit at home (for off-site backup), so I took the power brick from this unit home and tried it on the other, identical unit.  It worked fine, so the power brick isn't the problem.  I've pulled all of the drives out because I don't want to risk accidentaly wiping them!  I guess this is a board-level problem and the basic unit is toast.  What I'm wondering is if I purchase a new, empty 214 unit, can I plug my old disks into that and rescue my data?  Are there any sources of spare parts to try and rescue this one?

    Welcome to the Community!

If your RN314 is just a couple of years old and you purchased it brand new, You may want to contact NETGEAR Support since x86 NAS (RN300 up) has 5 year Chassis Hardware Warranty. See ReadyNAS Warranty.

It does seem that there might be issues on the PSU/Chassis of your NAS. What firmware is installed? Have you tried booting without the drives?

If you plan on replacing your NAS, I would suggest going with another x86 unit such as the RN424 or better. See ReadyNAS models. There are no spare parts available, buying a refurbished/2nd hand unit might do.

Yes, you can plug in your disks from your RN314 unit to another OS 6 Unit and that should boot normally.

You may also want to try and recover your data by using 3rd party Apps like ReClaiMe or if you are comfortable with Linux. I would still advised replacing your RN314 or at least try to check it's warranty with Support.

    Hope this helps!

The warranty is five years, so you might double-check the warranty status.

I believe that Netgear had migration from arm->x86 in mind, but not the reverse.  However, I did test migrating x86->arm a couple of years ago, and that worked.  Of course you can also use your home NAS temporarily, and rescue the data from it.

An empty RN424 would certainly work, though it is about $100 (current US Amazon pricing).

  • Thanks!  I just talked to Tech support, and they're sending me a new RN424 unit (the 314's are discontinued)!
