Used ReadyNAS 314 - Mainboard RMA

Hi,

I just bought a used ReadyNAS 314 which seems to have two defective ethernet ports, everything else is working fine. Apparently these ports stopped working after updating from 6.2.0 to 6.2.4, but further upgrading to 6.4.1 didn't solve the problem. As far as I know there is no entitlement for the owner of a used ReadyNAS to 5 year the hardware warranty which would in theory still be applicable to the first customer. Is there any possibility to get an RMA or to buy a new mainboard for this unit directly from Netgear?

Concerning the hardware status of my unit: It boots up all fine but has no IP-adress assign via DHCP, to check whether this might be a driver/ software related issue I have booted a Windows 10 directly form an inserted SSD. This boots up just fine, except for the two ethernet ports which are nowhere to be found even in windows. Although I do find it more than a bit odd that only the two ethernet jacks should have been dead while USB3, esata and so on all work fine, my only possible explanation is a defective mainboard.

Any other suggestions are highly appreciated. As a last resort I could still run the hardware with OMV and an USB-Ethernet adapter, however I would strongly prefer the original OS recognizing the two NICs.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Simon_01,

    Welcome to the community!

I apologize but the warranty will only be given to the registered owner of the unit who purchased the product from authorized a reseller. Pre-owned/2nd hand units do not have warranty as they are considered as refurbished units.

NETGEAR does not sell any internal components of ReadyNAS chassis not only that it will void the warranty of the product but also it is beyond support of NETGEAR. If you want to open the NAS and replace its components, there maybe a chance from members of the community to answer you here but it may take a while.

    Regards,

How did you boot the NAS into windows???  I'm thinking the previous owner might have made some other mods.

You could try removing the disks (labeling by slot) and inserting an unformatted test disk.  The NAS should make clean install, which might resolve the problem (worth a try anyway).

  • Hey,

thanks for your replies. Too bad there is no possibility for buying a new board. Still, debian is running on it like a charm with 4gigs of memory and a USB3 1gig ethernet adapter I have solid throughputs even on crappy protocols like samba (for multicore-processors with a lower gigahertz per core anyways).

On how to run windows: I swapped in my win 10 ssd into slot 4, went into the bios, switched of usb 0 (the linux startup disk) and made slot 4 the first boot device, sure enough windows booted up like a champ.

Thank you guys for your support anyways, since I am not an owner who is entitled to support afterall it means a lot that you cared about my problem here anyways.
