Very slow connection between NAS and IMAC
Hi all,
Any advice appreciated. First, my set up.
iMac <cat5> TP Link switch <cat5> Router (Thompson 585) <cat5> NAS
I have an iMac that was running OS10.5 and has now been upgraded to 10.6 with no difference.
I have a netgear duo with a 1TB disk (Seagate ST31000528AS).
I don't believe I have RAIDiator installed on the mac since I manage the NAS from my PC.
The issue is the connection speed between the NAS and iMac. I cannot stream a movie between the two and when I'm transferring files I'd estimate the speed to be about 1mbps. 6GB takes about 2 hours. That doesn't sound right to me.
Trying to stream the same movie file on my PC is absolutely fine. That is on the same connection apart from the last cat5 and the switch. Can anyone suggest why the connection is so slow? All help appreciated.
Chas.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredRAIDar is the client app you can install on your Mac/PC.
RAIDiator is the firmware on the NAS itself? What version of RAIDiator is on the Duo?
What brand and model disks do you have installed?
Be sure to use known working Cat5e or newer ethernet cables. Cat5 is too old. - ReadySECUREApprenticemdgm has some very good points.
Have you tried connecting directly from your Macintosh to the ReadyNAS? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredFor the Direct Connect see How to Direct Connect to your ReadyNAS
- NeilFannAspirantHi Guys,
Right, I've plugged the nas into the switch that the mac is plugged into and I can stream as I should be able to. Guess that means that the router is the issue (or the cat5 (might be a cat5e) between them but that seems less likely to me).
It's not convenient to leave the NAS on the switch permanently - better to fix the network. SO - any idea why my router is slowing my traffic that much? I can't see evidence that it's affecting anything else. For example:
NAS <Cat5> Router <Cat5> Switch <Cat5> Switch <Cat5> PS3
can stream just fine.
Cheers,
Chas. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
It is only a 100 mbit router. What is the model of the switch?NeilFann wrote: SO - any idea why my router is slowing my traffic that much? - NeilFannAspirantThe switch is TP Link. As I understand it this is also only 10,100?

TP-Link is a brand, not a model. Their TL-SG1005D is gigabit. What model do you have (should start with TL-)?NeilFann wrote: The switch is TP Link. As I understand it this is also only 10,100? - NeilFannAspirantThis is the one:
TP-Link 5-Port 10/100 Unmanaged Mini Desktop Switch (TL-SF1005D)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000FNFSPY/ref=wms_ohs_product - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAh a 100Mbit switch. I presume the F stands for "Fast Ethernet". Get a Gigabit switch. Also make sure you are using Cat5e or newer ethernet cables. Cat5 is fine for 100Mbit but doesn't cut it when you move to using Gigabit.
- ReadySECUREApprenticemdgm is correct. Getting a Gigabit switch and using proper links will create a much better environment for network transfers.
