Vista Wireless Performance Questionnaire
With the amount of Vista issues on the forum, we are putting out a questionnaire here to get more information on the setups to get get a grasp of what is happening. Based on user feedback over the last several months, we've also updated the questionnaire with some possible solutions as well that you can easily try out.
0) Updated to Windows Vista SP1? SP1 contains a number of network changes that improved overall throughput with the ReadyNAS.
1) Tried changing MTU on ReadyNAS and laptop to 1492? Instructions on how to change Vista MTU at http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/vistaMTU.htm . A couple users had success keeping the ReadyNAS MTU at 1500 and switching Vista MTU to 1460.
2) What model of Wireless Router and firmware is being used?
3) What Wireless Card model and firmware being used?
4) What connection speed are you seeing for Wireless Adapter (i.e. 54 Mbps)?
5) What's the connection speed between ReadyNAS to Router (10/100/1000 Mbps) -- you can see this in FrontView's Network page.
6) What's the throughput from Windows XP to ReadyNAS and Vista to ReadyNAS? Both Machines at or near same location?
7) Whats the throughput from Windows XP to Vista?
8) Does disabling firewall help? One user reported problem solved by disabling Symantec firewall.
9) Does uninstalling anti-virus help? One user reported problem solved by uninstalling CA anti-virus.
10) Does enabling jumbo frames work? Several folks reported problem solved by enabling jumbo frames, and this also had the effect of speeding up wired transfers.
11) Are you able to try another router? A couple users reported replacing current router/switch solved the problem.

ANS: Windows Home Vista Premium SP1 Laptop using 32bit.
ANS: All systems on network were set at MTU = 1500. Setting Sony TX5 Vista laptop to 1460 fixed my problem. Tried 1492 and it seemed as bad as 1500.
2) What model of Wireless Router and firmware is being used?
ANS: BT HomeHub V1 6.2.6.H
3) What Wireless Card model and firmware being used?
ANS: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Driver 10.6.0.29
4) What connection speed are you seeing for Wireless Adapter (i.e. 54 Mbps)?
ANS: 54 Mbps
5) What's the connection speed between ReadyNAS to Router (10/100/1000 Mbps) -- you can see this in FrontView's Network page.
ANS: 1000 Mbps
6) What's the throughput from Vista to ReadyNAS? Both Machines at or near same location?
ANS: Wired through above router. NAS-> Vista 32bit = 5.8 MB/sec average, peak = 6.92 MB/sec
7) Whats the throughput to Vista?
ANS: Vista wireless MTU = 1460 2.3 MB/sec average, peak=2.89 MB/sec
Does disabling firewall help? One user reported problem solved by disabling Symantec firewall.
ANS: Didn't try
9) Does uninstalling anti-virus help? One user reported problem solved by uninstalling CA anti-virus.
ANS: Didn't try

ANS: Didn't try - parekbergAspirantHi all,
I am on a Vista laptop with Atheros wlan adaptor. My Nas is on a 100Mbit wireless router.
I changed the NAS MTU to 1492 and my Wlancard to 1450.
Now I have between 2 and 3 MB/Sec up and down.
Very sweet! Thx for all the tips in this thread.
Best / Pär Ekberg - JoggaAspirantI just wanted to express my support for the statements previously made by "Do what?":
It is very annoying that NETGEAR is not capable of offering a product (in my case a ReadyNas Duo), including firmware, that can adjust the MTU such that it can communicate properly with a Vista computer over a wireless LAN. I am not a computer expert (yet) and I find it very frustrating that one is forced to investigate and perform these rather fundamental communication settings by hand, when it at the same time seems to work fine for XP computers (in the end I also found that an MTU at 1460-70 on the Vista computer and 1500 on the Duo gave an acceptable performance level).
In addition, the e-mail alerts have apparently stopped working after upgrading to Raidiator 4.1.5 (there is an existing thread about this in the forum as well), which also meant that it took a while before I understood that the Duo had upgraded without telling me about it.
All together I would not recommend someone planning to connect a Vista computer to a NAS over a WLAN to buy a ReadyNas. The quality just isn't there, at least no yet. - MeenenatorAspirantWow.
We have been using a Vista based laptop for over a year now. Doing wireless. Luckily only one of our four machines uses Vista, so not the biggest problem.
I had totally written that machine off from accessing the NAS. Went thru all available hints and tips a good while back, until I resigned the issue.
And suddenly here is the answer... reduced the MTU to 1430 and everything looks good.
Get approx 50% on a 54Mbit wireless both ways.
Haven't upgraded to latest fw yet, but are considering it. At least I know that there could be issues with that as well (so 4.1.6-T6 is probably the one I will try). In any case resent the idea about flashing the NAS and the uncertainty that comes with it.
Thanks guys! - coyutAspirantMTU 1430 and I still only get bellow 300KB/sec...

The new beta firmware is suppose to correct for this. Maybe you can try it and see if the problem is fixed. - coyutAspirantInstalled RAIDiator 4.1.6-T6 [1.00a043]
Speed is now a little up to 430 KB/Sec...
Better, but still not really usable. - rdouvenAspirantI've had all the same issues and have it now tweaked to the right settings. The following link provided me with the right information:
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/vistaTCPtweaks.htm
I've got the following settings:
C:\Windows\system32>netsh interface tcp show global
Querying active state...
TCP Global Parameters
----------------------------------------------
Receive-Side Scaling State : enabled
Chimney Offload State : enabled
Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level : normal
Add-On Congestion Control Provider : ctcp
ECN Capability : enabled
RFC 1323 Timestamps : disabled
and I get nice constant speeds of 21Mbit/s to and from the NAS (on an old linksys WRT54G v2)
By the way all MTU's are on 1500 (on the nas as well as on my vista laptop).
changing MTU is explained on: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/vistaMTU.htm
hope this helps some of you as well. - rdouvenAspirantoh by the way... it took me some time to get to these settings as in the beginning it didn't seem to take... but it apparently takes some time before it becomes active. In the end I tried it with a reboot in between each change of parameter.
regards,
Robin - coyutAspirantTried your setting. Speed is now again a little up to 630KB/sec but still to slow.
Especialy while copying many 3MB Files speed is still around 480 KB/sec
