When will the 516 be refreshed?
So I'm finally thinking I need to get myself a new 516. My Pro6 is working great (although there have been a few issues lately with OS6, being that it's a legacy model and all).
Thing is, of course, the 516 is now about 2 years old and I really don't fancy buying a new 516 only for it to be EOLed 3 months later (Netgear are notorious for pulling stunts like that).
Can anyone hazard any guesses as to when the 500 series might be refreshed?
André

You could look at past history and make your own very rough guess, but past refresh times may be quite different from the future.
We at NETGEAR would advise to buy what you need when you need it.
In my opinion if you wait to see if a product is refreshed you could in some cases end up waiting a long time only to find that the model that was available when you started waiting would have suited your needs just as well.
If you want to wait for new electronics you really have to consider what you'd expect to improve that would be worth the wait.
Sometimes you can see PCs or some other electronics marketed as Up to 2x the speed at something, but they may be comparing with a 5 year old model or running a test that doesn't accurately reflect what your particular use case would be.
There are existing bottlenecks for file transfers such as gigabit Ethernet connection or the Wi-Fi on your router and laptop. The 516 already can easily max out a gigabit Ethernet connection.
The 516 is a great NAS and very powerful. For most users the 516 will be more than powerful enough for years to come.

Just my opinion here (I don't work for Netgear and have no inside information).
But my take on their strategy in recent years is that their goal was to consolidate everything on one OS - which is OS6. This reduces the software maintenance overhead, and hopefully will give them more capacity to develop new features. And I think its better for users also - 4.1.x, 4.2.x, and 5.x variations created a lot of confusion and disk migration challenges.
Now that they've done that, we are seeing some platform upgrades (for instance the RN200 to the RN210). That likely will continue throughout the line, but even if a platform upgrade shows up for the RN500 series, I'd be shocked if OS6 upgrades were discontinued for the RN516.
FWIW, if it were my call, I'd introduce a 4-bay RN500 model before I refreshed the RN516.
