Wired router issue with ReadyNAS Ultra

After trying all the usual "things to try", including all the Vista stuff, I submitted a ticket with the router group:

1/18/2012 4:46:00 PM
Modem model: Netgear WNDR3400
PC model: Dell Insprion 530
Operating System: Windows Vista 64bit
Error Message or Problem: WIRED transfer rates between my PC and ReadyNAS Ultra NAS are slow.
FW version: 1.0.0.50
I recently purchased a ReadyNAS Ultra and I''m trying to get it run faster for WIRED connections. Direct connect transfers between the PC and NAS are fast (11M/s) and wireless transfers are about what is expected (2.5M/s). But wired connections are very slow (150-200K/s). I''ve tried wired transfers with several PCs with the same result. I''ve tried different router settings (no NAT filtering, etc), removing all other connections to the router, and turning off the DSL modem without any difference in speed.

I do not have a Gigabit network so I'm OK with what I'm getting wireless but the wired transfer rates should be higher! Has anyone encountered this before?

Do the network statistics on the ReadyNAS show any packet loss?

Also, if you try running an internet speedtest do you see the same effect?

Nothing on the transmit side but here are the received errors:

    RX packets 2132100
    RX errors 1550
    RX dropped 131
    RX overruns 0
    RX frame 1550

I ran the IOMETER tests which is how I came up with the speeds I first mentioned. When you ask about "internet speedtest", do you mean my internet browsing speed? I have a 6M download DSL connection and I usually get at least 4M.

I meant the internet browsing speed (both up and down)-comparing wired and wireless.

The idea is that the only difference between your wired and wireless test is the link between the PC and the router. (The link between the NAS and the router is always wired). So if you are seeing poor performance on the wired link, it is useful to know if it affects anything else. Presently your wired NAS speeds are much slower than your broadband speed.

Anyway, you are seeing quite a few receive errors. Maybe clear the stats, and then immediately run the wired test, then check the stats as soon as it completes.

Wired download is 4.3M and wireless is 3.9M. Upload is the same. I'm not sure how to reset the error counts but I'm seeing any additional errors this evening. Don't have a clue as to what it could be.

One question, when I copy MP3 files, it says it can't copy properties associated with the files...

    Property Loss
Are you sure you want to copy this file without its properties?

    Strange.
  • I think you can reset the error counter by unplugging the network cable and plugging it back in after a few seconds or by restarting your ReadyNAS.

Do the test StephenB suggested and see if it gives errors. If it does, try connecting your NAS to your router with a different ethernet cable and try again.
