Add feature to traffic meter control to enable device caps
Hi,
I have an R6400. I really like the router and most of the features, although some features just don't work at all such as the blocking.
Anyways, an idea I want to submit as an improvement for home and small office users is related to data traffic. Many users have a monthly data limit with their ISP. As example I have a 500 Gb per month limit. If I go over that, then there are huge addon fees.
The current traffic meter in the R6400 looks like it has ability to track total data for the month. It also looks like there is a "disable the internet connection" option for when the data limit is reached.
I would very much like to see this feature enhanced/expanded to where the user can program a data cap or quota to each IP device address on the router. For example; I have two problem users on my network. My daughter and her iPod, my son and his iPhone. These two are responsible for 70% of our monthly data usage because of the amount of video streaming they do. I would like to program a set limit per device so that there is fair play to all the other users on the network.
As specific example, I would assign a static IP address to my daughter's iPod, let's say it is 192.168.1.42. Then I would go to the traffic meter and assign a monthly data cap limit of 45 Gb to IP 192.168.1.42 , when that limit is reached - block any further internet access from 192.168.1.42 In this way, her iPod is free to use the internet up to 45 Gb for the month. And when that is reached, it is cut off. Leaving the remainder of the monthly limit (500-45= 455Gb) to the other users on the network.
This feature I am asking for is not a "speed" control cap like QoS. It is a cummulative monthly data cap per device/IP.
Can this be done on the next firmware update please? Please please pretty please with ice cream and cherries?!

This is an outstanding requests (Add feature to traffic meter control to enable device caps). I can only dream of a 500GB limit -- mine is 30 GB (30 expensive GB). This required monitoring with Genie more often than once per day. Being able to have Genie limit the use by IP would be a huge plus.
After struggling to keep usage below 30GB last month, on the first day of this month, I found that Google Chrome had unexpectedly sucked up 9 GB. Apparently, a url I had opened had a hidden recurring video or refresh that continued despite the fact that my laptop is set to go into sleep mode automatically. Nasty surprise -- only 21 GB left for the rest of the month. I would put all active PCs on my netword on a limit if I could. I would also want to be able to reset that limit so that I might put a 1 GB limit for a given day and then reset it (if exceeded) for the next day.
All internet providers are now moving away from unlimited data service. My provider (the only high speed internet service availabl in my area), Verizon, escalating costs -- 100GB/mon would cost $750 for data only service. (And when I say the only high speed service, I mean approx 20Mbs. But this is an improvement over the only DSL service which is less than 1.5Mbs.) So it should be apparent that this data limiting capability on Genie become potentially critical for many customers.
I didn't know that US ISP act now like that. Thanks for the info!

A few years ago someone added a traffic meter to their router that it took was a small program running on the router it told them their network speed amount of data usd and give them a graph of their internet traffic. I belive that Netgear could come out a meter of their own that could be peared with the router with special mating code and give you the information you need. It was on youtube.

In fact today I saw a add for super small micro cpu board embedded in device that could monitor your data usage just between the modem and router http://www.pcworld.com/article/3138886/computers/the-orange-pi-zero-single-board-computer-ships-for-699.html yes they sale the cpu for $ 6.99 so way couldn't a networking come up a device that plugs in between the router and modem with a led screen and alarm to like you when your close a preset limit that you control.

100% agree with this one. At a minimum we need to be able to see individual device consumption. Most of us operate under a data cap, and a single forgotten Hulu session can get really expensive really fast. If we could easily identify the offending device it would be much better than having to pause all devices.

Would love this on my Orbi rbr20 I am using a gargoyle router to do this and have orbi configured to only do wifi and can't use the benefits of orbi as I need this feature to stop the kids from using up all the internet. Is it possible for an Orbi router to do this?
