Jan 05, 2015Private Time Machine "volume" disappears
Hello and a happy New Year,
I'm using private time machine on a ReadyNAS 104 running 6.2.2.
In general the private time machine is working fine, but there's an issue after a scheduled ReadyNAS power down.
Description:
1) Private time machine visible in Mac OS Yosemite, time machine backup working fine using "holger's time machine".
2) scheduled ReadyNAS power down at 8pm
3) scheduled ReadyNAS power up at 10am next morning
4) time machine backup scheduled for 10:10am (scheduled using TimeMachineEditor)
It should use the private time machine volume "holger's time machine" but it fails because the "host is down" from the time machine logs:
10:10:00: Starting automatic backup
10:10:00: Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://holger@PrivateNAS._afpovertcp.local./holger's%20timemachine
10:10:30: NAConnectToServerSync failed with error: 64 (Host is down) for url: afp://holger@PrivateNAS._afpovertcp.local./holger's%20timemachine
10:10:31: Backup failed with error 18: The backup disk could not be found.
5) I logon to the Mac, open time machine system settings and press "select volumes": the private time machine volume "holger's time machine" is not listed.
6) I open the ReadyNAS local admin page and go to "backup -> time machine".
At private time machine I open the settings for account "holger" and just press the "apply" button without any change.
7) I switch back to the Mac window, go into the time machine system settings and press "select volumes" again.
Now "holger's time machine" volume is available.
8) I start a manuel time machine backup without selecting "holger's time machine" volume again and it works fine.
For me it looks like the ReadyNAS is not making the private time machines available after scheduled power off / on again.
This is not 100% true as sometimes the private time machines are still available after a scheduled power off / on. But most often only for one day (the first day) after a scheduled power off / on.
Any idea how to track this down and fix it?

- Retired_MemberOops ... the smiley before "I start a manual ..." should be point "8" in the list.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDo you still see this issue after a manual restart of the NAS?
What about if you restart the Mac after rebooting the NAS? - Retired_MemberI tested today again but it worked fine all the time - even after manual powering down the ReadyNAS and recabling the environment.
I will continue to test and monitor and update this thead with details after it reoccured.
I usually happens every 2nd day ... - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAlso is your Mac connected to your network via ethernet or Wi-Fi?
- Retired_MemberMy Mac is connected through WLAN and Ethernet - I tested both.
This morning the private time machine volume was not available anymore.
I restarted the Mac 2 times. At boot it issues a message that the volume does not exist on the server.
I opened time machine system settings and listed the available volumes. The private time machine volume was not visible.
I mounted the ReadyNAS on the Mac using same user credentials than time machine is using.
In the finder I could see all shares except the private time machine, which is usually visible there, too.
So I logged into the ReadyNAS and went to backup - time machine.
I opened the settings for holger's private time machine, changed nothing but only pressed the apply button.
Holger's private time machine share immediately showed up in the finder and it's selectable for time machine backups which than complete successful.
So I believe the private time machine is not exported by the ReadyNAS after (scheduled) power off / on. - mreckhofAspirantI'm having the same issue here. Went right to where you had mentioned just clicking on a user and hitting apply, and my volume showed right up.
Unfortunately, I had already tried to have it use a different backup before and now it is doing another full backup. But the volume is at least there. - LeofwineTutorI have just had the same problem after rebooting my RN102 through the web interface. I tried backing up several times which all failed with no given reason then I just reselected my Time Machine volume, re-authorised and it seems to be working now - at least it is part way through a backup.

Hello,
I experienced the same, I have a MakBookPro with Yosemite and aReadyNas 104 OS 6.2.5.
As long as both systems are on the time Machine is reachable and working fine. As soon as the MAc or the NAS went down or move to sleep, the time Machine is gone and I have to disasble the service and re enable it on the ReadyNas before any backup can work again. This behavior occur only since ReadyNas Version 6.2.2 before that all was working fine.
I definitely see the issue in the REadyNas software.
- Retired_Membergood to hear it's not only me as this means we should get it resolved.
My 104 is running fine since days, although it powers down and up 2 Times a day (scheduled) - LeofwineTutorI realised about an hour ago that Time Machine hasn't backed up for two days. I attempted to reconnect via TM preferences but my password was rejected when I used the username ReadyNAS (I am 100% certain that I used the correct password!) and when I tried with my account name or admin I got 'The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error 2.)'.
I rebooted the ReadyNAS and tried again only now my Time Machine backup does not appear as an 'Available Disk' although it is listed as a 'Backup Disk', when I try to initiate a backup manually, I am told that it is not available.
So, basically, there is currently no Time Machine volume visible even though it is set up and can be seen via an application like Path Finder. - LeofwineTutorOK, well it's working again now having gone through the procedure in Holger's 7th January post but as I could not see any settings to change in the Private Time Machine settings, I had not clicked on Apply.
This all seems a bit clunky for a slick looking bit of equipment and software.
