C7800 Keeps Disconnecting and/or Very Slow

Our C7800 Nighthawk cable modem router recently started disconnecting or getting VERY slow speeds out of the blue. We purchased it in April 2021 and it worked flawlessly up until the middle of last month. This happens while diriectly connect to the Nighthawk AND on WiFi from several different devices. I've done a factory reset, contacted the ISP (Wow! Internet) multiple times, rebooted, etc and have had no luck. Very frustrating. 

 

The Cable Connection info changes often. One time I only had one unlocked channel, I'll refresh the cable connections page and all of a sudden ALL of the downstream channels are not locked. The ISP keeps telling me it's a hardware issue and to contact Netgear. 

 

There's one splitter in the Coax cable and I don't have a power source where it comes into the house to directly attach the Nighthawk to it. 

 

Do any of you have suggestions?

You have errors in the cable connections page plus your logs are indicating issues. 

Start with removing any amplifiers, signal attenuators, or splitters from the coax.
From there check the line for kinks, damage, moisture in the line.
Check the connectors for improperly made ends, foil touching the copper coax line, bad/old/cheap connectors, or corroded connections. Replace them if you do.
If you can, simply connect the modem right where the coax comes into the home. This prevents wiring in the home from being the issue. I know you said you don't have an outlet but grab an extension cord and try the connection.

Thanks for the reply @plemans ! I removed the splitter from the coax line and connected the Nighthawk directly to where coax comes into the house. Cable appears to be in good condition. WiFi dropped out multiple times since moving it.

You've still got some indications of line problems in the logs. And now your power is a touch high. 

Not sure what splitter you had in line but your power jumped significantly from removing the one you have. 

Try putting a decent quality double splitter back in line. Maybe a triple. 

Just make sure its a decent quality. the channels you had issues with (hz not just channel number) cleared up but now others have errors. 

Try that first. 

and once you do that, clear the logs out so we know that anything new on there is from after the change. Not sure if you're log has events from befor the change. 

 

 

If it doesn't help, the isp might need to check the line.

Just not quite a 7db one. You could get a double or triple and drop the power just a little bit less. 

And make sure its on there tight on both ends. From changing splitters, your power cleaned up a bit on some of your channels and got worse on others. 

So make sure its on there tight as well as check the end of the coax cable to make sure none of the foil or shield is hitting the copper wire.

Here's a look at the last few days with the new splitter. Internet has dropped on us a couple of times. Wish I knew more about these logs so I could tell what's going on. Any thoughts? @plemans

You've got a lot of unlocked channels, errors in the line, and logs indicating line issues. 

If you've done what you can on your side, time for the ISP to try.
