Packet Loss with CM1200

So I've been getting really bad packet loss, after using ping plotter from my PC to trace the issue, I believe I've narrowed it down to the CM1200 modem.

This is what my setup looks like.. modem > google mesh wifi puck > everything else

Let me explain a little further. The house we live in has hard wired ethernet running throughout the house, So my PC is upstairs plugged into the wall. I've traced my room to the patch panel downstairs, and from the patch paenel to the outlet closest to the modem. So the google puck is plugged into the modem, and then I have an ethernet switch plugged into the google router with my PC and an xbox downstairs plugged into the switch.

Anyways, here's my ping plotter results

At first I thought the 2nd hop (which seems to be where the issue is starting) may have been the first step to our ISP, but after unplugging the google router from the modem, and resetting the modem, I plugged my PC directly into the modem then ran ping plotter and the 2nd hop in these pictures confirmed to be the modem (was still getting packet loss when plugged directly into the modem).

We just switched from another netgear modem that had the puma 6 chip, we figured that may be causing the packet loss, but this modem is having the same issues.

Any help appreciated!

Re: Packet Loss with CM1200

Thanks for posting in the correct forum! 🙂

did you get a screen snip of your connections page? and logs?

You also put in the other post there's a switch in line (when I asked about splitters). It should go CM1200----router----swtich.  Is this how you have it?

Re: Packet Loss with CM1200

I didn't get a snip of the connections page or logs. I logged into my modem last night and didn't see anything like that. I'm at work and could attempt again in a few hours when I"m home.

and correct, that's how I have my setup modem > router > switch

Here's a screen shot of my PC plugged directly into the modem. For some reason it's appearing as that 10.xxx.x.x IP address but when I ran an IP config when plugged in it came back as a different IP.

Also wanted to point out that the response time with the modem according to ping plotter seems higher than it should be, even when plugged in directly!

Thanks!

Re: Packet Loss with CM1200

very hard to compare like that. if you're on windows, theres a screen snip function that lets me look at it much easier.

Re: Packet Loss with CM1200

try to get all the upload, download, and the ofdm channels. A couple bad channels can mess things up.

and your signal levels should all be within 3dbmv of each other (roughly). From the few I can see there's already a 7dbmv range. Not a whole lot of erros but I would need to see the rest of your channels

Re: Packet Loss with CM1200

Can I get those from the modem login? or would that be the router? I didn't see any of that info browsing the modem login

Also,

Is it possible to have my PC direct connected into the modem? Essentially bypass the router altogether while still keeping our wifi?

Re: Packet Loss with CM1200

Need to scroll a little more to the right. The ofdm channels list errors but to the right is the uncorrected errors.

If you haven't, I'd contact your isp as your line powers vary to much. There shouldn't be that much variation.

Ok, What would I tell my ISP specifically do you know?

Thank you

Re: Packet Loss with CM1200

Well your options are:

1. Try a different modem. Potentially could be the modem. Stranger things have happened.

2. have you ISP check the line. Tell them your getting a lot of packet drops and your signal strength varies to much. many first line ISP support people aren't going to understand this but if you get someone that knows a bit more, they'll understand.

Re: Packet Loss with CM1200

Out of curiousity, do you know if it's possible to plug more than 1 device into this modem? When I attempt to plug my PC into the modem with the router, my PC doesn't get internet access

Re: Packet Loss with CM1200

Only is your ISP supplies you with more than one ip address. Most don't for consumers. You can use link aggregation if your router has that option.

Re: Packet Loss with CM1200

For most consumers the cm1000 with a single gigabit port is more than enough. The consumer with a router that supports wan side link aggregation, the cm1100 is perfect. The 4 port cm1200 is more aimed at business ip addresses or the rare ISP that supplies multiple ip addresses AND enables that feature in the modem.

Re: Packet Loss with CM1200

Hmm ok still a bit confusing.

It appears the cm1200 does support link aggregation. Would I set that up through logging into the modem?

Thank you!!

But does your router support wan aggregation?

NG R7960P and R8000P and Orbi RBK852 are ones that support WAN LAG.
