D6400 and BT TV configuration

Please can anybody help me? I read some really good reviews about the D6400 especially from folk who were having trouble with the BT Hub 5. In particular, one reviewer who was worried about connecting to BT TV sport said the wizard configured easily and the BT TV streamed smoothly and seamlessly. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get BT TV to work on my router. I have spoken to Netgear support but that hasn't solved the problem. I then spoke to BT who eventually told me that the BT TV box does not work with third party routers. Is there any configuration I can set up to make it work? The reviewer who said his BT TV was working did not give specific details as to how he configured it to work.

I am subscribed to BT Infinity 2.

Apologies in advance if I make any faux pas on the forum - I'm new to this.

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Hiya - I was having similar problems with the D7000 - however I am positive I have read somewhere either here http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,15306.0.html or here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18665201&highlight=d6400 where someone has configured it for BTTV.

I am not very good with explaining - does you d6400 have the latest firmware? Have you enabled igmp snooping?

Rick.

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Hi, thanks for your response. I updated the D6400 to firmware version 1.0.0.34 which appears to be the latest version on the Netgear  download centre. By IGMP snooping do you mean enabling IGMP Proxying? I checked in the manual and this is disabled by default so in my case it was not active.

I've re-instated the BT Hub 5 for the moment as my son wants access to the BT TV Sport. I will enable IGMP later this week and  try connecting again. Couldn't find a specific answer in the links you posted unless I've missed it along the way.

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Yes - enable the igmp thingy and all should be good.

After you enable it, try the BT TV - if it still doesn't work switch the youview box off by the switch on the back of the box and switch it back on again after say 10 seconds.  Try it again.  It should work - failing that reboot the router.

The links I provided were lengthy (sorry) - try the above and let me know how you get on.

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Oops - the user guide was wrong. IGMP is not disabled by default - at least I've found mine WAS already enabled. I will try restarting the Viewbox again and see if that helps.

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Hmmmm, if that doesn't work try rebooting the router.

Do you have many settings applied to your router?  When I apply a firmware update to my D7000 I always back up my settings, do the firmware update, then reset to factory settings and then restore my settings.

Are you on ADSL or VDSL?

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

OK - problem resolved. The Netgear D6400 can automatically configure BT TV using the set up wizard but only if it has the latest firmware (V1.0.0.34_1.3.34) installed. Although I've only just bought my router it had the previous firmware version which then updated AFTER I had run the wizard. I reset the router using the pin hole at the back and then started again with the wizard setup. This time the screen showed the country (UK) and the ISP (BT) and after pressing 'next' the following screen asked 'do you want to enable BT TV?' After checking the box the wizard ran through the rest of set up and hey presto, BT TV works.

I looked at the configuration settings for the IPTV page and they are as follows:

country - UK

ISP - BT

Transfer mode - PTM

DSL mode - VDSL2

IPTV - enable this interface

VPI - 0

VCI - 32

Use VLANID - check the box and value = 101

Priority - 0

Bridge mode - leave unchecked

Does your internet connection require a login - say 'No'

Account name - enter the router name - D6400

Domain name - leave blank

Internet IP address - check use static and enter 10.10.10.10

subnet mask - enter 255.255.255.0

Gateway IP address - enter 10.10.10.1

DNS address - click 'use these DNS servers'

Primary DNS - enter 10.10.10.1

Secondary DNS - leave blank

NAT - leave enabled

Save these settings. I misunderstood when I saw a screen shot of this page from someone with Plusnet as I thought the static IP and DNS addresses were necessary for that ISP alone (BT issues dynamic IP connection for the internet) so I could have resolved this problem sooner. Hopefully the above will help anyone else with a D6400 to get their BT TV  working.

Just a final comment: When I contacted Netgear support, the overseas agent told me to change the VLANID for the internet to 10 with priority 0 and for IPTV 20 and 4 respectively. My internet connection then failed completely until I reverted to 101 and 0.

BT's overseas agent, whom I asked only for the configuration settings, told me that BT TV doesn't use VLANID at all.

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Hello Rick,

I have had the same problem as you I think. I have been unable to get the 'enable IPTV' option on the Genie setup wizard. I contacted BT who were very unhelpful even though the only reason I bought this router is because the home hub 4 is rubbish. The contact I had with Netgear was longer but equally fruitless. They told me to take the router back to the shop. I am on ADSL phoneline broadband rather than fibre but I am wondering if you can send me the file with your router settings on? I tried to copy the settings from your very helpful screenshot but that didn't work so maybe there's something else going on on another settings page. Any further advice would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Richard

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Make sure you have the most up to date firmware for your router. Go to the Netgear router log in screen and you can conduct an update request for firmware that way. Hopefully squishedspider will get a notification for this thread and can help more.

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

I'm not in front of my computer at the moment to direct you to the correct part of your Netgear log in, but if you click on advanced and look at the options in your left I think you'll be able to figure it out.

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, I have updated to the latest version of the firmware but still no joy with enabling IPTV option on Genie wizard. Any further guidance very much appreciated from either of you. This has me totally stumped (not hard to do).

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Hmmm, inbox me your email address as I think me and squishedspider had a lengthy email exchange which I can forward to you. Also, have you read back on this thread to see what squishedspider has done and followed it?

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Read his post of 31st August and follow that. Make sure you have the firmware he mentions on your router and follow how he got it working. Netgear c/s are next to useless and have no concept of what youview tv is.

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Also make sure you have the most up to date software on your youview box. To force an update, go to settings, device management, scroll up to software update and click on get update (this should already be highlighted in blue).

Hmmm, make sure that you're selecting the correct interface as his guide and the accompanying picture above is for his fibre connection. You're on ADSL.

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Although this thread is out of date, as I've got a D7000 and got it working and it's not listed in there, it may help you if you posted for help on there: https://community.bt.com/t5/YouView-Boxes/Known-Routers-to-Work-with-Multicast-IGMP/td-p/994338

I'm with Plusnet (a part of BT) and I totally feel your pain. We want routers that do much more than the ISP provided ones.

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

I'm sorry to say that I am conceding defeat and going to persist with getting help from BT to get what I have paid for. I agree entirely, it's ridiculous that there isn't the support from the providers or router manufacturers when this must be a common issue. ISP routers are always rubbish in my experience and it's a shame that it isn't as simple as shelling out for a quality product. I will keep an eye out for fixes in this area for the future. Cheers for all your help.

Have you tried the BTCare Community Forums?

The official supporters may not be up to much on this sort of thing, but you may find a fellow user who has investigated this.

Re: D6400 and BT TV configuration

Hi Richard,

Sorry - I've only just picked up on the thread again. Did you do a factory reset after you upgraded the firmware? If not, backup a copy of your current router settings (just as a precaution), then reset the router using the pin hole at the back. Once the router reboots, run through the genie wizard set up and the IPTV option should appear. It didn't show on my router after I upgraded the firmware until I did the factory reset. Hope this helps.
