HOWTO use DGN2200v2 as a WiFi access point (fixing DHCP issue)

I wanted to use a spare DGN2200Mv2 as WiFi access point (AP).

I set a static IP and disabled the DHCP server on the device, following Netgear's official instructions (which I found using the Wayback machine): https://web.archive.org/web/20110103062416/http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/965

I ran into problems with WiFi clients being unable to get IP addresses from the network's DHCP server. These were noted in the Netgear instructions, in another thread about using a similar model as an AP, and a thread about general issues using a DHCP server – but the suggested solution of setting static IPs didn't work for me (not to mention being kind of a hack).

Luckily, I found that setting STP mode on the bridge interface solved the problem – clients connected to the DGN2200 WiFi are assigned network addresses, and can reach both the internet and the DGN2200 itself.

I couldn't find where to do this in the web interface, but it's straightforward if you enable telnet access:

# brctl show
bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces
br0 8000.4494fc37d06e no eth0
                                                        eth1
                                                        eth2
                                                        eth3
                                                        wl0
                                                        wl0.1
                                                        wl0.2
                                                        wl0.3
...
# brctl stp br0 on
# brctl show
bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces
br0 8000.4494fc37d06e yes eth0
                                                        eth1
                                                        eth2
                                                        eth3
                                                        wl0
                                                        wl0.1
                                                        wl0.2
                                                        wl0.3
