What kind of service? DSL? Something else? The WNDR3400v3 is a
router, not a modem+router, so, depending on what you'd be getting from
CenturyLink, you may need more equipment (such as a DSL modem).

To me, that sounds like complete nonsense, but some actual
information about what kind of service we're dealing with might affect
that judgement.
I get DSL service from CenturyLink, but through a reseller. There
are various parameters which must be specified in my DSL modem, but
nothing which can't be done by a normal user. If you're dealing with
some low-level, non-tech sales type at CenturyLink, then you may need to
get in touch with someone who knows something beyond the fact that
they'd like to rent/sell you some gizmo(s) or other.
Whatever their requirements, getting them in writing (e-mail, paper,
Web page, ...) would make it possible to evaluate them without any
distortion which you might be adding.
