Powerline 1000 wifi connection with SmartThings

Purchased a Netgear Powerline 1000 v2 + WiFi adapter and connected it to my SmartThings Connect router. Trying to get WiFi in a building out back. All lights indicate green but unable to connect to the _EXT network. Anyone able to use the Netgear powerline extender with a SmartThings Hub Router? Any advice?

What, exactly, did you connect to what, exactly?  (Hint: If a device
has different types of Ethernet ports, then "connected to device" is not
enough detail.)

Has your "SmartThings Connect router" a model number?

> [...] All lights indicate green but unable to connect to the _EXT
> network. [...]

Which "lights" are "All lights"?  As I read the "PowerLINE 1000,
[...]" User Manual, the PLW models have a blue "WiFi LED".  Is yours
green, or dark, or absent, or what?

> [...] unable to connect to the _EXT network. [...]

"connect" what?  "unable" is not a useful problem description.  It
does not say what you did.  It does not say what happened when you did
it.  As usual, showing actual actions (commands) with their actual
results (error messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than
vague descriptions or interpretations.

Does your (unspecified) wireless device detect an "_EXT" SSID?  Are
you using the right passphrase for it?

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.  Look for the LED
descriptions and "Troubleshoot".

I'd do my basic set-up in one room, and, when everything works that
way, _then_ I'd start separating the various gizmos.

Thanks, to be more specific...

- Connected ethernet cable from Arris Surfboard modem to my Netgear PWL 1000 Adapter

Has your "SmartThings Connect router" a model number?

- Model #ET-WV525BWEGUS

> [...] All lights indicate green but unable to connect to the _EXT

- On the main adapter: Power LED green, Ethernet LED green, Pick A Plug LED green. On the Wifi extension adapter: Power LED green, Ethernet LED green, Pick a Plug LED green, Wifi LED blue. See: https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/PLW1000v2/PLW1000v2_QSG_EN.pdf for image of indicator lights.

- The NetgearXX_EXT network shows up (i.e., wifi signal is there). However, when connecting my smartphone or smart TV, each device will NOT connect to the network. On my smartphone, "weak security" warning pops up. TV and phone won't connect to the wifi network though. Using default password that came with the Netgear PWL product.

Does your (unspecified) wireless device detect an "_EXT" SSID?  Are
you using the right passphrase for it?

- Yes, device picks up the _EXT SSID. Using the exact password that came with the product. Won't connect to the _EXT wifi network though.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.  Look for the LED
descriptions and "Troubleshoot".

- Been there, done that. Not helpful. Saw a youtube where a technician said that WPA settings / encryption might be an issue. Not sure I can change that on my Smartthings router though. Would be curious if anyone has done this.

- Thanks, I tried to connect to the Netgear _EXT network in a room adjacent to my router/modem but that wouldn't even work. Still getting the same problem with connectin to the wifi network even though all of the "indicator lights" (as summarized above) tell me that the product is functioning.

That sounds like a horrible plan.

> Has your "SmartThings Connect router" a model number?

Given a question like that, did you really believe that "Arris
Surfboard modem" would be a valuable description of that device?

Assuming that "Arris Surfboard modem" really is a modem, then it
should be connected to the WAN/Internet port on some router, not to an
extender.  At that point you were probably doomed.

Did you look at the pictures in the documentation for these gizmos?
Were they ever shown on the WAN/Internet side of a router?  If these
gizmos were strings of Christmas-tree lights, then you might be able to
string them together in any order you might wish.  But they're not.
The extenders are used to extend your LAN; connect them there.

Re: Powerline 1000 wifi connection with SmartThings

Believe me, I am admittedly very IT dumb. Looking for any help. Here's pictures of each of the connections to each of my 3 products (Arris Surfboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem, SmartThings Connector WiFi Router, and the Netgear Powerline 1000 v2 + Wifi). Happy for you to tell me what to plug in where (or for you to tell me these things do NOT work together).

Ok, but most gizmos have a model number printed on them, which
shouldn't be all that tough to find.

> [...] (Arris Surfboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem, [...]

   Ok.  It's a modem.  (No built-in router.)

> [...] Netgear Powerline 1000 v2 + Wifi).

Not either of the actual model numbers.

> Samsung SmartThings Router: [...]

That web page shows multiple devices.  I'm willing to assume that
your gizmo is a router, but, as requested, an actual model number would
build confidence.

> [...] Happy for you to tell me what to plug in where (or for you to
> tell me these things do NOT work together).

I don't see why they wouldn't.  I'd be happy if you read the
documentation, and followed the instructions.  It's not that
complicated; you just can't assemble these gizmos at random.

Put things back as they were before you got the extender kit.  When,
presumably, things generally worked.  I'd assume that this involved a
coaxial cable from your ISP to the modem, and an Ethernet cable from the
modem to the WAN/Internet port on your router.  When that much works
(again)...

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the Installation ("Quick Start") Guide.  Read.
Connect the PowerLINE gizmos as shown in the pictures, with an Ethernet
cable between a LAN Ethernet port on the router and the (only) Ethernet
port on the PL1000v2 (the smaller one, without the antennas).

Plug both the the PL1000v2 and the PLW1000v2 into power outlets.
Observe the happy LEDs.

      6. On your computer, tablet, or smartphone, connect with WiFi to
         your new PowerLINE WiFi network.

When that much works, you can try moving the PLW1000v2 to the place
where you actually want its wireless-network help.

Read more, including the User Manual.

Re: Powerline 1000 wifi connection with SmartThings

I may not have described it accurately (with model numbers, etc.). But there's nothing in the instructions you posted below that I haven't tried. Coax cable into modem (not really anywhere else you could plug this in), ethernet cable from modem to router -- everything worked fine up until point. Ethernet from Netgear Powerline into modem. Exactly what the pictures indicated.

Like I said, devices pick up the _EXT SSID but won't connect to the wifi network. Quick Guide has aboslutely nothing useful (besides the pictures), and User Manual doesn't have a solve either. That's why I went to community postings -- to see if anyone has ever actually had success specifically connecting and utilizing a Samsung SmartThings Wifi Router and the Netgear Powerline 1000 v2 adapters.

Anything else to troubleshoot?

      2. Use an Ethernet cable to connect the PowerLINE adapter to a LAN
         port on your router.

"modem" and "router" are spelled differently for a reason.

I can't make it much clearer.
