Is there a way to create a desktop shortcut for files?

I think you ended up subscribed to the thread somehow (and are getting email notifications).
Try clicking on the three vertical dots on the posts to show the options menu. If you see an "unsubscribe" option, then select it.

You navigate to the folder (or file) in file explorer, and right-click. You'll see an option to "create shortcut."
Normally it will put that in shortcut in the folder you are in, so you will need to move it to the desktop after you create it. But if you are looking at the share list, Windows will tell you that it can't store the shortcut in that location, and offer to put it on the desktop instead. Obviously you say yes.
