WN3000P security problem with an N300
I'm trying to get a WN3000P to extend a network provided by an N300 router.
The N300 is configured with a passphrase 64 bit WEP key (as opposed to a hex key).
When I configure the WN3000P I can't select a passphrase only WEP key. So I use generate to make a hex one. But then the extender doesn't *seem* to configure correctly.
It says it has connected to the router but when I try and connect my laptop to it:

I suspect that the WN3000P just can't be used with WEP the way I have it. I'm not going to change the WEP though.
Can anyone confirm? Netgear support is truly awful. Long scripted responses. Very tedious.

Have you tried entering the key chosen in the router, into the corresponding "Key" (Key 1, 2, 3, 4) field during the extender installation?nicferrier wrote: Can anyone confirm? Netgear support is truly awful.
I have a WN2000RPTv2 here at home and have had it hooked up to a router using WEP in the past, it worked flawlessly. Don't know about the WEP passphrase though, I simply entered in the corresponding WEP key.
How was the support awful, btw? What did they say? - jmizoguchiVirtuosoSeems like most updates hardware with most un secure network.
WEP is probably not good to be using anyway. I'm sure there reason using WEP is some old devices can not handle WPA, WPA2.
60sec hack on WEP and keep old devices or WPA2 with strongest network. I would choose WPA2.
WEP 64bit - 5 character
ASCII: 12345 Hex 3132333435
WPA , WPA2 - 8 character - nicferrierAspirantIt's WEP and I don't want to change all my devices. It's a home router in a country village... it's not really a security threat (and all the machines inside the network are linux and quite well secured).
It's not not possible to enter the passphrase in the key boxes because they only accept hex.
I think if you use the hex key that's different than the passphrase. I am not sure why it thinks it's working because it's not.
I guess I have to phone support. - jmizoguchiVirtuosoSome of the updated pc no longer take WEP and when it ask for passphrase like this way wether hex or ascii. the character length is different
You will going to have issues with devices start drop WEP usage as over decade old encryption. Should consider to change for fact you are making difficult to communicate based using behind technology
:) - nicferrierAspirantso basically the WN3000P doesn't do the security model I want and i should send it back. That's what this comes down to. Thanks.
- FairytailVirtuosoHi,
NETGEAR extender only accepts Hex key format for WEP. It only accepts 10 Characters which is limited to 0-9 and A-F. When typing the WEP key it should be on a key 1 box.
