XR1000 needs to be reset constantly!

Help!
I have a Nighthawk XR1000, and it is just over 2 years old.

It needs to be uplugged and power cycled several times a week. I just did a factory reset a month ago.

The firmware is updated and current. I always keep it updated (10.0.0.68_1.0.54)
I just needed to power cycle it, and it factory reset. Yup. Turned the power off, unplugged it, and when I plugged it back in I had to go in and set up my password and wireless networks again.
What is going on with this?
It seems I need a new Netgear router every two years. They just don't last.

Do you have solutions?

What other routers (and manufacturers) do I need to be looking at to be comparable? (And NOT replace a router every 2 years?)

Or is this just disposable technology at this point?

Why? What happens that prompts you to jump through these hoops?

Then the usual boilerplate questions to eliminate some of the more common issues that crop up here.

If there is one it might also help if you told people the make and model number of the modem/gateway/ONT that connects this router to the Internet. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?

I ask because a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting.

While many questions about routers are generic and could be answered anywhere, some things need specialist knowledge.

You might get more help, and find earlier questions and answers specific to your device, in the appropriate section for your hardware. That's probably here:

Nighthawk Pro Gaming Routers - NETGEAR Communities

Gaming routers have their own DumaOS operating system that is nothing like the one on Netgear's standard routers. There is also a dedicated and capable support team.

You might like to search there for messages related to your issue.

I will ask the Netgear moderator to move your message.

In the meantime you could visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware. Look at the label on the device for the model number.

Check for various troubleshooting tips.

You may have done this already. I can't tell from your message.

I mention it because Netgear stopped supplying printed manuals and CD versions some years ago and people sometimes miss the downloads.

Re: XR1000 needs to be reset constantly!

Great question, here we go:

1. What causes me to reset the router?

It could be things like our phones will not connect to the router WiFi at all. Or our IOT devices won’t connect to the internet suddenly. I’ll have a flashing “internet light” on the router. We will call our ISP and we don’t have an outage and after a power cycle everything will be fine. The last time I reset is because a power cycle didn’t fix anything and I couldn’t log into and access DumaOS, it wouldn’t load.

2. What is connected tot he router? Modem?

Nope, I have fiber correctly coming into the router. No modem at all. I have a secondary router downstream after this as my main gateway, and a couple of switches and an extender, but that’s it.

3. Have I searched the community?

Yup, and lots of people complain that they have to reset the router because DumaOS won’t load and have similar issues.

4. Have I contacted Netgear support?

I did put in my serial number and found the only support options I have is to make a post and search the knowledge base. I don’t have access to call any dedicated support team. Everything has expired and I’m not willing to pay for a dedicated service contract.

So, the DumaOS people are the best to seek help from. Now you are in the right parish. Perhaps they can assist.

How is that "router downstream" configured. As an Access Point.

That router downstream is set up with the static IP of 192.168.1.2 and it assigns addresses above a certain number. I don’t remember. Perhaps I need to define the ip range on the xr1000 after a reset. I need to look into that.

Re: XR1000 needs to be reset constantly!

In LAN Settings on the XR, set the DHCP range to start at .50, then assign reserved IP addresses to devices between .2 & .49 so they're out of the DHCP range, apply, reboot from the interface, wait 2 minutes and see if that stops the disconnects. Otherwise change it to a range that doesn't conflict with your other router and assign IPs that don't conflict.

Make changes then reboot the router from the interface, this should act as a hard save and then if you unplug the router the next time it shouldn't reset.
