Re: New - R7900P/R7960P/R8000P Firmware Version 1.4.3.88 Released

I installed V1.4.3.88 firmware and as with V1.4.2.84 I am experiencing DNS errors on my Windows 10 PC. When I rolled back to V1.4.1.82 Hot Fix the problems went away.

DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN

Router: Netgear Nighthawk X6S AC4000 R8000P Router

Modem: Netgear CM500

ISP Provider: Comcast.net

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks,

wglotz

Enable IPv6 on the router. Set Auto Detect.

Reboot the router, modem and all devices.

Ok, looks as if IPv6 is enabled.

I will post again in a few days and let you know the results.

Thanks for the quick replies,

I re-enabled the Guest network and a few minutes later my 2.4 and 5G networks stopped working.

Rebooted Modem and Router and it is back to normal for now...

Make sure your wifi networks are set to operate on different channels. IPv6 in general has no impact with IPv4 setup. Infact they both can work simultaneously. Unless, there’s a software/ firmware glitch that is preventing it.

Personally, I avoid having too many wifi as they create interference. I used two 5G network and one 2.4 G network.

I setup the one 5G with isolated subnet so that it doesn’t disrupt my other private network. And I offer it to selective guests.

Re: New - R7900P/R7960P/R8000P Firmware Version 1.4.3.88 Released

All "appears" to be working at the moment. It's really up to my wife, who uses a Windows 10 PC (I use a Mac), to tell me when she has an issue with DNS errors. She has not been in the office this week so I should know more next week.

Let me summarize what I have for my LAN:

Modem: Netgear CM500

Router: Netgear Nighthawk X6S AC4000 R8000P Router

Netgear EAX20 AX1800 WiFi Extender

ISP Provider: Comcast.net

CM500 modem and R8000P router are located in the central portion of the house. EAX20 is Ethernet hard wired as an access point and located in my office in the back corner of the house where the R8000P does not do such a good job on coverage. EAX20 operates as a separate network with 2.4 and one 5GHz band. R8000P operates with a 2.4 and two 5GHz bands and Dynamic QoS is enabled. Smart Connect is also enabled. Also using a USB storage device plugged into R8000P. The Guest Network uses the 2.4 and one 5 GHZ channel on the R8000P. All 5 bands operate on different channels. These 5 channels were chosen using data from a WiFi sniffer showing the unused channels or channels with least interference from neighboring WiFi devices.

All DHCP duties are provided by the R8000P. DHCP starts at 192.168.1.100. I have static IP addresses set up for fixed devices such as printers, TVs etc, all located below 192.168.1.100. This way if there is an issue I know what the IP addresses are for these devices. I have reserved about 10 DHCP address above 192.168.1.100 for certain known devices using Address Reservation in the LAN setup on R8000P.

Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

Thanks, already done with saving config file.

I will post again as soon as any issues arise or if no issues I will post next week to let you know that things are working properly.

Thanks for your help,

Ok folks, I finally got back to working tis issue.  Before trying a full factory reset, I enabled IPv6, rebooted the router and the devices.  That appears to have corrected the problem.  I have not gotten a DNS error since.  Thanks for the assistance.  I'll update if it shows up again.

Re: New - R7900P/R7960P/R8000P Firmware Version 1.4.3.88 Released

All,

I have read several posts about DNS not resolving and am suffereing the same issue and it is now impeding my ability to work from home. I can tell you the following:

  1. I used a managed switch and wireshark to monitor the traffic between the R8000 router and my cable modem
  2. I also used a seperate wireshark to monitor traffic between my laptop to the R8000 router
  3. I can see my l laptop send a DNS request to the router and the router forwarding the request to the specificed DNS service on the public side of the network.  I also note the UDP source port on the public DNS request so I can then match it to my laptop request given the NAT table changes this.
  4. I can see the DNS service send a valid response back to the R8000 router with a destination address of my public IP address and the approprate destination port with matches the port used for the routers DNS request.

So far, so good, everything is as expected.  Now it gets wired:

  1. The R8000 sends my laptop a DNS response with a "REFUSED" response code.  Note, the DNS response from the DNS service did not have a REFUSED response code and in fact has the resolved address in it.
  2. The R8000 also sends the DNS service an ICMP message "Destination Port Unreachable".  Funny thing is it I can see it is the correct desination port.

Clearly, this is not the correct behavior.  It has nothing to do with my ISP or anything else like it.

Also, when I filter the trace on the public-side for ICMP Desination Port Unreachable messages, I have a lot of them and they are all comming from the R8000 and they are all assocated with DNS server responses.

I have the traces if it helps.  I would like to know when there will be software to fix this, what work arounds are available, and if there is an older firmware version the WILL WORK.

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

Try enabling IPv6 on the router while v.88 is loaded.

Re: New - R7900P/R7960P/R8000P Firmware Version 1.4.3.88 Released

Ok, it been a week since I enabled IPv6 and my wife has not experienced any DNS errors as before enabling IPv6 on her Windows 10 PC. Everything appears to be working normally.

So it seems that "having to enable IPv6 to alleviate DNS errors" is an issue with the R8000P firmware, otherwise IPv6 would be enabled automatically and we would not be able to disable it. I think this goes a little deeper but my limited knowledge of internet protocols won't let my fingers expound further on this issue. 😎

Thanks for all the help. It's nice to have a place to go when you are in need! I will post again if any problems arise in the future.

Is your DNS that you are connecting your IPv6 network is also on IPv6 ?

In case not then it maybe DNS server issue and likely not IPv6 in R8000P.

However, in a perfect world if you still getting same errors then it’s likely R8000P likely be at fault

Not sure what you are asking but my first sentence in last post may have been a bit confusing, should have read:

Re: New - R7900P/R7960P/R8000P Firmware Version 1.4.3.88 Released

DNS - Domain Name Service/ Server. Is often used where IP addresses are set as dynamic i.e. IP address will change upon expiration of lease time.

Most routers manufacturers have a built in feature that act as DNS server. However, third party DNS can also be used such as google, no ip etc. These server helps tracking machine based on their Domain Name regardless of IP address.

If DNS server is restricted to operate only with IPv4 then it’s likely may not be able to translate IPv6 and may result in errors.

However, I could be wrong too as IPv6 is designed to work in presence of IPv4.

That’s what I trying to understand.
