Apr 03, 2023Router keeps dropping connection
I am at my wits end with this. I have BOTH, an Orbi AX4200 system, as well as a Nighthawk R7000P.
I had some many ongoing issues with the Orbi dropping connection (both wired and wifi) that I gave up on it entirely and put it in AP mode, reverting back to my old nighthawk. NOW I AM HAVING ISSUES WITH THAT TOO.
Every time the router drops, It takes every wired and wireless connection with it, and will not reset unless done manually at the router.
The R7000P Firmware is 1.3.2.134
The Orbi Firmware is 4.6.14.3
As far as I can tell this is the most recent firmware for both.
I have confirmed with my ISP that they have seen zero drops or connection issues on their end.
The current setup consists of the ISP Modem/Router in bridge mode, wired to the R7000P with Wireless turned off, wired to the Orbi Mesh system which is operating in AP mode.
The original issue was that the Orbi would drop EVERY evening, once a day, between 5-10pm typically. once I set up the R7000P it has been good for the last week or so, until today it dropped during some heavy downloads, and I am not home so it is just down until I can get back there to reset it manually.

So with the R7000P router online and the Orbi system turn OFF, the NH router drops the internet connection?
When this happens does the top Internet LED turn AMBER?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended. What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and 40 to 48 channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?Has a power off for 1 minute then back ON with the ISP modem and router been performed since last update?
Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:
Turn off and unplug modem.
Turn off router and computers.
Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on computers and rest of network.Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update? A complete pull of the power adapters for a period of time after the factory reset then walk thru the setup wizard and setup from scratch with a wired PC and web browser. Recommend setting the default DHCP IP address pool range to the following after applying and a factory reset: 192.168.#.100 to 192.168.#.200.

When this happens does the top Internet LED turn AMBER?
-The router function of the orbi is OFF, the units are still ON in AP Mode.
-I am unsure if the LED on the NH turns amber, I will check as soon as I am home in an hour or two
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.-Will confirm ISP Model # once home in a few hours. Mfr is Sagecom I believe
-Have two CAT5e LAN cables running through the walls between ISP Modem and NH Router, approx 30-40ft. Initial testing when the orbi's would go down, switching cables made no difference on the drops, but this could be a separate issue with the NH.
What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and 40 to 48 channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?-This is not a wifi issue as ALL connections are dropping, including all wired connections.
-However for clarity sake I did rotate channels for both bands on the orbi system and found no difference in the drops, but again, it could be a different issue happening now on the NH
-currently 2.4Ghz is Ch6, 5.0Ghz is Ch48

Turn off and unplug modem.
Turn off router and computers.
Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on computers and rest of network.-Entire cycle has been done multiple times during outages.

-NH had not been used for a few years before being setup last week. A complete factory reset was done prior to FW update and setup. Current IP config is 10.0.0.1
-Majority of devices on network are IP locked using the router to between 10.0.0.100 - 10.0.0.254

Alrighty so. Im going to break this into two messages so it doesn't delete on me again.
"So with the R7000P router online and the Orbi system turn OFF, the NH router drops the internet connection?
When this happens does the top Internet LED turn AMBER?"
-The R7000P and Orbi are both turned ON, however the Orbi is in AP mode and the NH is being used as the router.
-When I arrived home the internet was still down however the amber light was NOT on, it was still white. Pulling the WAN cable coming from the ISP modem into the NH has been the easiest and quickest way to reset it. Everything immediately reconnects after that.
"What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended."The ISP Modem is a Sagemcom F@st F3896 . It is located in the basement as I have no coax run in the house. Two CAT5e lines are run from the basement to the 2nd floor where the NH router is located. I have tried switching between both but have the same disconnecting issues on both.
"What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and 40 to 48 channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?"-This isnt strictly a wifi issue as all connections are dropping, including wired. However currently the Orbi AX4200 is set to 2.4Ghz: Ch6, 5.0Ghz: Ch48

What mode is the modem working in Gateway or modem only mode? Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem. https://kb.netgear.com/25891/DMZ-on-NETGEAR-routers
