RAX80 Connection to Fiber

Good afternoon and thank you for stopping by!

 

I just recently switched from cable to fiber internet.  My RAX80 — Nighthawk AX8 is the same router used for both connections.  The internet was operational when using the cable internet provider.

 

Currently, there is confirmed internet at the point of the ONT (optical network terminal just in case).  The ONT is connected to my RAX80 by ethernet.  The RAX80 is not connecting to the internet. 

 

I already checked to see if it was a DNS issue, but confirmed its not.  

 

What could be preventing the router from resolving an IP from the ONT?  Everything on nighthawks support pages say it should all work seamless / automatically.

 

I appreciate any insight!

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended. 

 

Check with the ISP to see if there is any Specific configurations needed between the ONT and router. Some may required a PPPoE configuration. Most only required DHCP on the WAN side.

 

Has a power off for 1 minute then back ON with the ISP modem and router been performed since last update?
Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:
Turn off and unplug modem.
Turn off router and computers.
Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on computers and rest of network.

    • This is a little above my paygrade.  I'll research and see if I can figure this part out.

    • I havent turned the ONT off only becuase the tech plugged his computer directly into the ONT with a cat6 cable and was reading good internet.
    • The cable going from the ONT to my router is a cat6
    • I will perform this sequence you suggested and report back

PCs may work with out a power cycle, however between a ONT and router, the ONT or modem can configure to the MAC address of the prior connected device. When connecting up a new device like a router, the prior MAC address maybe still configured and would need to be cleared to give way for the new MAC address, so a power cycle will effect this.

I performed the powercycle as listed.  No change in behavior.

 

I'll add to the original post that the tech said (after connecting to the router via ip address and admin / log in) that the "DNS" was set to my original provider (charter) and he had to set it to google.

 

The internet indicator light flashses amber (or red, im kinda colorblind) and every now and then will flash white for a second and then back to amber.

 

I did make sure that the firmware for router was updated.  I also took screen shots of the router's information and internet port if thats helpful.

Just curious, do you have a neighbor, friend or family member that you could take the RAX router to and see if it connects at a different location? Would be telling if the problem follows or not. 

 

Seems like there is a problem between the ONT and router.

Do you think loging into the router directly with a laptop and looking at the settings would provide any information?  

When the tech did this he said 'aha!  found the issue" and thats when he said he set the DNS to google instead of charter.  It worked for the few minutes while he packed up and then of course it stopped working again.  I dont think the provider has any responsibility beyond their ONT, but was curious if logging directly into the router might be an avenue?

Yes, try logging into the router and look under Advanced tab/Setup/Internet

 

Might try setting the DNS to Auto save and Apply, or try using a different DNS like cloudfare or quad 9.

I see no mention in this conversation of a "reset" of your RAX80.

 

You need to get it to forget any settings it inherited from your cable network.

Maybe you did this, but, as I say, I can't see any mention of this. It is the first thing to do whenever you change the Internet service, before all of the other recommended sensible measures.

 

An alternative is to use the browser graphical user interface (GUI) to go into the router and take it through its Internet Setup Wizard.

Correct sir, I have only "rebooted" it through the phone app and did a manual power cycle.

 

I plan on going home and logging in with the admin / pw info.  I'm assuming the internet setup wizard is somewhere inside that GUI after logging in?

Netgear has steadily improved this over the years. The wizard plays nicely with most ISPs, although it can get confused by exotic networks.

One more thought, if this fails, perhaps because the admin password doesn't work, then the reset puts you back to the original settings and default password.

I attempted to use the setup wizard but got the error “no Ethernet cable connected.” I changed the cord (even though I had previously confirmed the cable that was connected worked).

Still could not use the wizard by browser GUI. I used the manual reset on the back of the router.

It will get connection for a minute or so and then lose it again, repeating this cycle indefinitely.

You can select setup the router manually...

 

Possible this router is faulty. Would be good if you could test it at a different location if possible and see.

I would agree the router could be faulty and I will check that for sure. However, it was working just seconds before shutting it down and connecting it to the new ONT.

If you can test it at a different location, would be telling. Anything could have happened in between last connection and new connection with ONT. 


We still know know what the brand and model # is of this ONT that was installed.

    • ONT appears to be an ADTRAN SDX622v

 

I am currently connected by cat6 directly to my computer and getting internet immediately upon connection with no interruptions.

 

If I do have to buy a new router (it seems more likely now), do you have a suggestion for multi gig speeds?  Residential use, 30+ individually connecting wifi devices, gaming computers, mulitple 4k streaming tv's.

How big is the home? 

RAX120 and 200 and RAX300 and 500 have multi gig WAN ports. 

 

If you want something MESH, Orbi 8 and 9 series have multi gig WAN ports, 9 series has 2.5Gb LAN port. 

 

Gaming, XR1000 comes to mind.

Talk of cables and faulty router strike me as a " clutching at straws" theories.

Is that because you can't use the GUI? Or is it just the wizard?

 

If it is the GUI, I'd troubleshoot that.

I was in the GUI and selected the setup wizard but received the error that there was no ethernet cable detected.  I used the bypass to set it up manually but it seemed to only open up the router settings just as if i went to the 'settings' tab.  Either way, all of the settings when i went to set it up through manual without the wizard appeared to be set correctly.
