What's my real Internet speed?

I have a new Netgear WiFi RAX120 router with 500 mbps fiber-optic service.  The Netgear app on my iPad shows download speed of over 500 mbps.  That's great!  But from my desktop computers connected over wifi via the router, I can barely get 200 mbps download speed using SpeedTest.net.  What am I missing?

Re: What's my real Internet speed?

What wireless adapter is in the computer?

How far from the router is it?

What materials are in between the router/desktop?

Are you testing over 2.4ghz or 5ghz? (2.4ghz is a slow network and would be lucky to hit 200mbps)

While the RAX should be able to max out 500mbps over a 5ghz connection, thats under optimal conditions and with an AX wireless card. The further away from the router you are, the slower it'll be. And 5ghz speeds drop off quicker than 2.4ghz. (Plus 5ghz's signal attenuates quicker with obstructions.

So its important to know how far from the router it is, what materials are in between, what wireless device it is.
