Orbi RBK 350 connected to BT Smart Hub 2

Hi

I'm having intermittent problems with an Orbi 350 linked to a BT Smart Hub 2.

My internet is provided via BT Fibre 2 with a Smart Hub 2.

The Smart Hub 2 is hard wired to an Orbi RBK350 with two satellites.

The Orbi was set up out of the box and worked OK – then occasionally the link between the Hub 2 and the RBK350 would drop.

Searching the internet for solutions I read the RBK350 should be set up as AP Mode. I have made this change but still experience the problem of the Orbi not connecting to the Hub 2 intermittently.

I can monitor the Orbi network on a tablet and can see the link drop between the Hub 2 and RBK350 on the Network Map, after a while the link then re-establish it's self without any intervention and our PC and TV can then access the internet.

The Orbi RBK350 is on the latest version of firmware software :- v4.1.29_3.10.80

Has anybody got suggestion how the Orbi should be configured to solve this problem???

Thanks

Re: Orbi RBK 350 connected to BT Smart Hub 2

Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.

Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

Try Option #2 first.

Might ask the ISP if the Smart Hub can be replaced by the RBR.

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and 📡 satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS🛰️ to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

Re: Orbi RBK 350 connected to BT Smart Hub 2

Hi Furrye38

Opt 1 Contacted ISP they are unable to change configuration on hub.

Opt 2 Managed to disable all WiFi on hub but can't change the hub configuration used Orbi in Router mode - problem still occurs.

Opt 3 Managed to disable all WiFi and Orbi configured AP mode - problem still occurs.

I'm willing to replace hub for a RBR but don't know what a RBR is can you please explain.(network beginner).

House has 4 bedroom two stories and satellites work fine when the link is established.

Thanks for your help
